For civilization approach, I will suggest to watch a documentary made by Michael Wood, "Legacy of Civilizations." I loved it, I hope, you like it as well. The documentary is also available on Youtube.

Thanks for your reply. I'd like to read a book that uses the civilizational approach--preferably a text that isn't eurocentric. But feel free to suggest any books about world history that you think are worthwhile.
