it is quite disheartening when seeing nee mosques built in the U.S., that are completely irrespective of site, context, climate, etc.... but are vestiges of the ottoman post-byzantine form of dome and minaret. i guess as long as a lazy brick box has a frame dome on it and a detached functionless minaret, its a moswue...right?

can the mosque be implemented in a modern context, including stylistic principles, functionality, and materiality in form and metaphysics?

Well about few questions within your one question I would say1) yes mosque can be implemented in a modern context, becasue what is modern it is some thing derived based on old, it did not apear out of thin air, it was a reaction to what was happening in past/tradition so it is matter of redefining things.
2) yes functinality can also be enhanced a mosque doesnt' has to be only a worship place it can be a place where people can come and meet have gathering, ofcourse easier said than done for this we have ot be open to new things don't have to be radical but introduce new aspects to the activities that take palce. It can have a reading room for some one to go and read in peace....
3) The stylistic principles can be followed in new styles, a good example that I can think of is Faisal Mosque in Islamabad and The Assyafaah Mosque in Singapore
