Personal experience attests to that. In the long
journey, there are points that stand out. Points when
you are confronted by the depth of simple interactions
with others you meet. Points that become fixed in
memory for the inspired significance you will draw
every time they are recalled.
And so while watching ?Motorcycle Diaries?, tracing
the cross-continental trip Che Guevara took with his
friend, I was always seeking to identify those certain
points which ultimately transformed Che and eventually
propelled him to becoming the resistance icon of the
20th century. Points that pushed him to realize the
most inspiring of ideals ? those of equality and
freedom. From the escaping communist couple, to the
mining workers in Chile, to the indigenous of Peru to
the hospital for leprosy victims, all these people
played their role in transforming the wandering spirit
of Che.
The movie remained simple in its projected
observations and did not slide down any ideological
path ? and thankfully so. I suppose it need not have,
for Che, as the world knows him, was always
unambiguous in his political orientation. Struggle
and activism, so undeniably rooted in the tumultuous
history and unbelievable people of Latin America, are
traits which define life and heroism. ?Motorcycle
Diaries? documents how these traits were embedded in
Latin America?s most popular son.
As the asthma-effected Che jumps into the Amazon to
swim across and celebrate his birthday with the
segregated leprosy patients you find yourself pulled
in and rooting for the man to make it across. Defying
odds was Che?s trademark. And the movie captures one
such instance of Che?s resolve as he swims across the
Amazon to reach those rejected and segrated by society. This action of his is a pleasent foreshadowing of what feats against unforgiving odds Che will strike against.

Motorcycle Diaries
I recently saw the "motorcycle diaries" over thanksgiving break. man it was awesome. for those who dont know anything about this picture, im going to quickly give u a summary.
it depicts the early life of Che Guevara, a medstudent who along with a friend went on a motorcycle trip across south america that lasted more than 1 year. Along the way, Guevara saw inexplainable injustice and hardships of the aborignees...something that would haunt him and shape his political career in later life. he would eventually be killed by the CIA in 1968.
the cinematography in this movie was amazing. the chilean countryside and the andes were indescribably beautiful.
why am i saying all this? ...because i've got this crazy idea of doing something similar.
Guevara was medstudent raised up in a middleclass family who felt he needed to get something more out of life...which is why he embarked on this amazing expedition.
And as a 25yr old male living in suburbia, i can totally understand what he might've felt during that time. like guevara, i feel that i need a life changing experience....i dont want to spend the prime of my life throwing away my youth reading textbooks, and then realizing one day that i'm a 32yr single male who hasn't done anything exciting in his life.
....i want to make use of the time i have NOW...because this time is never going to come back...once its gone, its gone....
here's what im talking about:
im planning a huge expedition with a couple of friends.
Starting point: london, england. End: Tokyo, Japan
I intend to go by motorcycle, automobile, trains, horseback, boat, goat... whatever....across europe and asia for about 2-3 months.
why: to make use of my youth...and in the end, to be appreciative of what i have.
