A worsening humanitarian crisis in the Middle East has caused thousands of civilians to flee their homes. An estimated 27,000 refugees have already fled in search of safety, many leaving on foot, trekking through rocky terrains after roads and bridges were destroyed. Another 200,000 people in Beirut alone are internally displaced and trying to seek shelter in schools and government buildings.
The humanitarian needs are outstanding: the injured have little access to healthcare; electricity and water supplies have been damaged, leaving hospitals unable to treat the injured; and there is little to no access to food and basic necessities.
Islamic Relief is working to provide urgently needed food packages, portable water, blankets, mattresses, and medicine.
Islamic Relief Responds to Humanitarian Crisis in Palestine
Hundreds of thousands of civilians in Palestine--50% of whom are children?are on the brink of a humanitarian crisis. More than half of the population in the Gaza Strip is without electricity or water.
The United Nations has called the crisis "an emergency situation." According to the UN, fuel supplies to power the sanitation pumps in the area will run out in two or three days, and restoring power could take months. Serious outbreaks of diseases are feared due to lack of clean water and stoppage of the sanitation system.
UN Humanitarian Chief Jan Egeland has said that the situation could rapidly worsen. "It could very easily develop into a humanitarian crisis," said Egeland. "There are few places on earth where so many people are dependent on humanitarian assistance as in the Palestinian areas, and in particular Gaza."
Islamic Relief has operated in the Palestinian Territories since 1994. Working with partners such as the European Commission, Islamic Relief has provided emergency, educational, medical, and developmental assistance to the Palestinian people.
