Homeless

It is with a heavy heart and sadness i write this, but with the hope of doing something about it, inshallah. I was at a movie tonight, on my way to a Social gathering, stopped for gas. It was a cold and as i was pumping my gas i noticed an asian man sitting, curled up in a jacket, in the corner outside. As i was leaving, he asked if I had a dollar, i said, for? he said food, i said what u need i will buy it from the inside. He said can u get me one hot pocket, i felt sooo bad for him, went inside and bought two, and gave the guy wahtever cash i had on me. I drove off, but went back and asked why is he homeless, said his dad was abusive, and he must have been in his early 20's. lives on the street now. i wanted to do more for this guy and his story made me teary eyed, sad and thankful for everything i have mashallah. After that i decided to come home and write this. Now i spoke to a friend of mine and told her the story and we decided that maybe we can be more active than just helping one random person. Are there other houstonians out there, that want to team up and do something for homeless people? Please speak up and let me know. Ideas are welcome to.

Bism Allah Al Rahman Al Raheem

I participated in the Humanitarian Day www.intecorp.net) that took place on October 23, 2005 in NW Washington DC . It was supposed to be from 10am - 2pm, but subhan Allah, by around 12:30pm it was over! The homeless had all taken their items before the allotted time was even close! Alhamdu li Allah.

The event was fantastic, one of a kind for me at least. The idea was to provide the homeless with the necessities; blankets, hygiene kit (toothpaste, toothbrush, deoderant, wash cloth, soap, etc), underwear, socks, sweat shirts and pants, water, food, toys for the children, mittens and caps ...

The constant gratitude from the homeless who came was absolutely heart-aching. They kept smiling and saying "God bless you" and "Thank you so much for coming out and doing this for us" .. one said "Is this our Christmas gift? We're getting it better than those who'll get their Christmas presents on Christmas!!".

Someone also asked about our faith, and we provided him with answers alhamdu li Allah.

There was also a blind boy, probably 16 or 17 with a dog and he was .. subhan Allah .. so beautiful, I just wanted to love and cherish him, for he had a stranger assist him in gathering the different items we were offering. He asked if he could have a bottle of water, so I got him two. I asked if he had eaten, he said yes he had a slice of pizza. I asked if he wanted another and he said pleadingly "Can I?". I nearly fell on the floor crying .. but instead I got him food and prayed to Allah to protect and guide him. Ya Rab .. what about the Muslimeen in Pakistan? Sudan? Palestine? All those around the world, in destitute situations?? Ya Rab, your Mercy.

The event needed alot of preparation and all the items were donated by churches or bought BRAND NEW from Wal-Mart. The idea was to preserve the dignity of these people, who sometimes were dressed as proper as any one of us. Being homeless doesn't take much it seems .. lose a job, spend all your money trying to make ends meet, and one day ...

God forbid.

I thought I'd share this in case someone was inspired to start something similar in their community.

Biltawfeeq in sha Allah.

Event: Get Involved - Lobby Day, Washington, DC
Come join hundreds of anti-hunger activists in Washington, DC, on
National
Hunger Awareness Day and make your voice heard on behalf of critical

impacting hungry Americans!

Participants of Hunger Lobby Day will urge members of Congress and
their
staffs to support The Hunger-Free Communities Act of 2005. This
legislation
will (1) secure a commitment from Congress and the president to cut
hunger
and food insecurity in the United States in half by 2010 and end
hunger by
2015; (2) provide increased federal grant funding for community
groups
working together to overcome hunger; and (3) require the federal
government
to gather more data on food insecurity, especially at the state and
county
levels, so that resources can be better targeted to those in need.
The
legislation will also express the sense of Congress that the national
nutrition programs should be protected from budget cuts that reduce
eligibility or decrease benefit levels.

Buses will load from the MCI Center to Capitol Hill beginning at
noon. Lobby
visits will continue throughout the afternoon from 1:00 pm until
5:00 pm
concluding with a Hunger Lobby Day Reception from 5:00 to 7:00.
