As many of you know, the Southeast Asia region, particularly Pakistan was hit by a devastating earthquake, Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 8:55 AM (PST). The earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter Scale and was categorized as a ?major? earthquake. The earthquake epicenter was approximately 60 miles from the nation?s capital, Islamabad, near the town of Muzzaffrabad. This earthquake is the worst in Pakistan?s history, as well as in the history of the area in the last 100 years. The effects of the earthquake were felt throughout three of the four provinces in Pakistan, as well as in Afghanistan, India and the disputed territory of Kashmir, which was the hardest hit by this natural disaster. The currently death toll sits near 42,000 people with the injured being near 50,000. Estimates on the death toll are reaching 80,000 however, it could be higher given the terrain of the land and given the fact that many villages in mountain areas have yet to be contacted or helped. Most of you have heard on CNN and other news reports about the devastation to Islamabad, but there are so many other towns and villages that have also suffered immensely. Nine schools with children ranging from the ages of 3 to 15 years of age and many colleges collapsed taking the many souls trapped under the rubble with them. It is estimated that the death toll of children alone at the moment reaches 5,000. The vast areas lay with bodies of people lost who have not been able to be identified or claimed most likely because their families have also perished in the tragedy. The stench of death is everywhere, as people wait for help, hungry, thirsty, without clothes, or blankets to keep them warm in the harsh winter where it is raining and also hailing. The entire country is in mourning as they try to help those who may have survived, while dealing with the external environment and the 22+ aftershock earthquakes that occurred in the just the 24 hours that followed, three of which measured at 6.2, 5.5, and 5.1. Experts have also said that had the epicenter been slightly south, the effect of such an earthquake and it?s aftershock would have caused another tsunami.
Pakistan, is my home country, I was born there and lived about half of my life there. As news of this hit us, we were faced with losses of close family friends living in some of the worst hit areas, and as just one of the families that are suffering through this horrible ordeal, we wait for news on others. Pakistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, and what the western world calls a third-world country. On a first hand account of the country?s ability, it lacks the resources to get response and aid to most parts of the worst hit areas as quickly as possible. Experts have said this has set Pakistan back fifty years, and will need tremendous help in helping its people survive this disaster in the midst of disease. Attached to this email, is a way that any of you can help. Early Sunday, President Musharraf set up the President?s Relief Fund for Earthquake victims, in order to gather money to help the remaining citizens who survived this disaster rebuild their lives. Please have a look and if you can share your generosity with the people of Pakistan, please do. The attachment lists many ways to enable that effort. Please remember that in Pakistan even a $1 will help because it will feed a person for an entire day. Anything you can do will be greatly appreciated. People have lost so much over this past year with the tsunami, the earthquake in Sumatra in March, Hurricane Katrina and Rita, and now this earthquake. As people, who can give, I hope you will.

Saba how are you doing I haven't seen any of you guys in forever. And Ayesha man I really haven't seen you in forever, it has been prolly 4-5 years. You still look as beautiful as you did before. So anyways do you guys keep in touch with any of the old MSA people, only person I really kept in touch with is Zartaj and I see her in this lil "village" too. Last time I went to JMU was this past christmas and I went to the new bookstore and spent way too much money on National Championship gear.
I could go on forever about JMU but I do have a couple of ???s for you guys.
Is the sandwich place that was in the residence hall across from Eagle still open and what was the name of it??

Hi Akrum,Welcome to the site and glad you were able to reconnect with a couple of people including myself....was just browsing through this whole new village concept on naseeb and thought JMU outta be represented. I am doing great, guess all my studying and late nights in Zhane Showker really paid off! (I am doing finance work but as a consultant for a well-known firm in the Northern VA area)
I seem to have graduated before anyone else on this board so not sure of the answers to your questions.
My favorite JMU memories are lunch at Mrs. Green's (is this salad bar near zane still around?) ordering food from dave's taverna late at night, being invited by some craZy people to play football in the middle of Hurricane Fran my freshman year, and just walking by the lake and enjoying how pretty the campus scenery is especially in the snow (though this is somewhat ruined by that massive parking gargae i see they put up back when i last visited in 02:)
Question for everyone, how is the MSA at JMU coming along? especially membership? I remember when I first joined it was called Muslim Coalition and we had to apply for status as an actual MSA.
