100th Anniversary

Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Dr Allama Iqbal's unique tribute to Hindustan which is today an inseparable part of Indias national consciousness, has turned 100.

This poem celebrates India's famed pluralism, and it originated in somewhat parochial conditions. 100 years ago, Iqbal, then a young lecturer at the Government College, Lahore, was invited by his favourite student Lala Hardayal - a patriot who established the Gadar Party in the US - to preside over a function. Hardayal, who had established the Young Men's Indian Association (YMIA) after defecting from the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), wanted Iqbal to address his new organisation. But Iqbal, always the poet, refused to play politician and, instead of making a long speech, sang Saare Jahan Se Achcha with gusto.

It is wonderful that India's beloved song has been penned by Allama Iqbal. It reflects the deep culture, language, history and heritage shared by the people of the sub-continent. The original along with a translation is given below.

Tarana-I-Hind

Sare Jahan se achachha Hindustan hamara,
hum bulbulen hainiski yeh gulistan hamara!

Ghurbat men hon agar ham rehta hai dil watan men,
Samjho wahin hamen bhi dil ho jahan hamara!

Parbat woh sab se uncha hamsaya aasmaan ka,
woh santari hamara, woh pasban hamara!

Godi men khelti hain iski hazaron nadiyan,
Gulshan hai jinke dam se rashke jinan hamara

Aiy ab-e-rood-i-ganga ! woh din hain yaad tujhko,
utra tere kinare jab karavan hamara!

Mazhab nahin sikhata apas men bair rakhna
Hindi hain ham watan hai Hindustan hamara!

Yunan-o-misr-o-Roma sab mit gaye jahan se,
ab tak magar hai baqi nam-o-nishaan hamara!

Kuchh bat hai ki hasti mitthi nahin hamari,
sadiyon raha hai dushman daur-i-zaman hamara

Iqbal! koi mehram apna nahin jahan men
Ma'loom kya kisi ko dard-i-nihan hamara!

Song of India

The best in the world our Hindustan!
we are the nightingales, In its gardens of delight

Although in far-off lands, our heart lives in our nation
Think of us as being with you, where our heart resides

The world's highest mountain, partner to the skies
it is our sentinel, it is our protector

And prancing on your lap, play a thousand rivers
make you a garden-country, the envy of the heavens is ours

o flowing waters of the river Ganges! Do you recall the times
when our caravan pitched its tents, upon your banks?

religion does not teach, mutual discord and grudges,
we are from Hind, our nation is Hindustan

(civilisations of) Greece and Egypt and Roma, have been destroyed in this world
But our (Hindustani) imprint still remains

There must be something, that our civilization still flourishes,
though it has been threatened for centuries, by world powers

Iqbal! you have no kindred soul in this world,
Who will understand the pain concealed within your heart?
