12 months after the handover....

June 30th marks exactly a year after the US supposedly handed back sovereignty to the temporary Iraqi government. SInce then, 900 american soldiers died, 500 car bombings, 2221 deaths from those bombings over the past year, and over 8,000 iraqis died.

what was supposed to be a "cakewalk" is turning the US to have to negotiate with the insurgents. how come nobody mentioned the news that the US is holding talks with the enemy? shocking indeed innit?
www.arabnews.com section=0& article=65980& d=27& m=6& y=2005

talk about signs of the times. when the French regime wanted to lure the algerian guerilla into negotiations during the ALgerian revolution war, the FLN accepted but would not give an inch!! is this a way for the US to smell the enemy...to play some poker...will the insurgents be smart enough to not show all their cards. does this reflect a bigtime sign of desperation/weakness in the US considering that more bodies are coming back in coffins. dont u love how rumsfeld dismissed the negotiations as somthng thats been going on for a while and its all normal.

rummy even lost his composure when he was grilled by the Senators last thursday with Sen Bird teling him told him off asking him to get off his high horse when he comes up to the Chamber because unlike the senators who were elected by the people he was not. or how ted kennedy asked rummy how many strikes is he waiting for before he 's out (baseball termnlgy for 3 strikes & ur out) and rummy told him hes already submitted his resignation twice but bushy refused.

or how how Gen Abizaid said he he has no choice but to criticize Cheney when the VP said the insurgency was in it s"last throes". bush is soo lucky hes neither in an election year nor a midterm year. but i trust that the Republicans will get their commeupance in fall 2007 after the US hits a recession.

happy anniversary

It'll be fun to see how Bush justifies the Iraq war after the US soldier fatalities cross 2800- the number of people killed in 9/11...

eerrrr..maybe because he's finally...dead?? and maybe now Ryadh has taken a decision where to put bandar????don't u see a patern amid arab states' unwillingness to pull the plug off their vegetative leaders..King Hussein, arafat..sooo there is a chance that Fahd's state has deteriorated from last week to this week. timing is also key in these things. bandar knows his departure/travel is scrutinized by Saudi wacthers... but now they might have found a job for him..such as head of Intelligence and his dad Sultane becomes head of intelligence.

why would bandar resign NOW if the kingdom apparently is still not ready to announce the death of king fahd ( as we've seen thru their continuous denial as late as last week) considering the rumors of his death started last month?

i didnt mean to say 30-40 GIs dying in 1 day would be similar in magnitude to the 9/11 impact, i just meant it would be enough of a catalyst to transform fading support into action. we shall see

Foreign policy is being dictated by the far right regardless of constituency, though. And it's been shown that the media under Bush's presidency has become far less willing to promote ideas not in line with his. My prediction is that when 20-30 GIs are killed in one go, it won't be the tipping point that 9/11 was. Remember that 9/11 moved Bush to finally carry out his existing plan of taking over Iraq - the media therefore went along with it. I doubt the murder of 20-30 more soldiers is going to instigate a media rebellion against the Bush government. And the holy war opinion may not be raised in the news anymore, but that doesn't mean it's not coming up behind closed doors. The right-wingers are trying to bring about Armageddon through their policies, I've read that on the Guardian website too!

if that catalyst does happen..i.e. anattack killing at least 20-30 GIs at once..that would be the THE TIPPING POINT...the greatest changes in history were were materialized through tipping points. the fall of the Berlin wall was one, 9/11 is another. a parallel would be the 1982 bombing killing 200 US and french marines sped up the Isrli involvment in lebanon and kicked the US out. an attack of such magnitude would be THE catalyst that will chnage people's already faltering perceptions. i do not think the Holy War opinion still holds as much as it did...but even if it did throuhout the red states, it wont be enuff to stick in Congress when their constituencies need dough for their deficit-ridden states...

I totally see that happening, but I doubt it will have any direct impact on the American people's peception. As long as this is marketed as a holy war, Americans will feel justified in suffering casualties. I mean, just a few months ago 60% of Americans still believed that there is a link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda - they are too far gone to be able to see things differently. And though the insurgents won't stop, the US will see some way to twist that to their advantage as well. The parallels to Vietnam are becoming more and more obvious to the people that pay attention, but unfortunately most Americans aren't watching anymore. They would rather read about shark attacks and natural disasters than try and get their head around a disaster that they themselves are fuelling. I was watching a documentary last night where a journalist was asking some of Bush's die-hard supporters (groupies, actually) why they loved Bush - the answers ranged from 'because he's our president' to 'i don't know, i just do'. It's pathetic.

i see an attack on US troops in iraq al la Beirut 1982 style that will resurrect the war and US casualties to the front pages...say abt 20-30 GIs are killed...thats enough of a catalyst for people to get out in the streets, protest the war and complain about rising gasoline prices. there will NEVER EVER BE a halt in the insurgency. and as long as a timetable or a definite agenda isnt produced, the word "quagmire" will increasingly become replaced by "Vietnam". 3 months ago, $60 oil was unthinkable, today we're at $60, by Labro day well hit $70 and economic neutrality shall turn into economic malaise while political indifference becomes populous adversity. the Republicans may have won the election war, but they are down for a bloody defeat in iraq. while the headline pages tell stories of 12 yr old kids being bitten by sharks, the inside pages tell US foreign policy being bitten in the arse. the light at the end of the tunnel is just an approaching train !
