18 month old in L.A. needs donated blood, platelets

Asalaam Alaikum,

The family is from the San Francisco Bay Area, but has relocated to L.A. during the course of treatment for their daughter. They do not know many members of the L.A. Muslim community and have not had a chance to meet many local Muslims. Financially they are doing o.k, but donations of blood or a quick e-mail/phone call of support would be helpful to keeping the families spirits up especially during Ramadan.

Asalaam elaikum. Please consider donating blood or platelets for 18 month old Ameena Mooers, the daughter of Shadiah Salem and David Mooers, well-known to many of us in the Bay Area for their generosity and kindness to others. Ameena has cancer in the brain and spine. The following message is from Shadiah:

Salam U Alikum Wa Rahmat Allah,

Ameena is about to start to second cycle of chemo therapy.
Alhamduallah, the first one went relatively well. She required one
blood transfusion, and two platelets transfusions. We want to make
sure Ameena has blood available to minimize disease risk. Blood
testing these days is advanced but not perfect. There are a lot of
disease out there and we want to avoid giving her something random
that might cause her more harm. Therefore, we are currently looking
for donors from our brothers and sisters.

Ameena can accept blood types A positive and negative. O positive and
negative. She can only accept CMV negative platelets.

To get tested on blood type and CMV status ask your doctor to provide
a lab slip that will ask for blood type and CMV status (it will either
be negative or positive). This is a simple blood test that can be done
at any unilab, or Quest diagnostics. They seem to be everywhere. Some
insurance companies cover this, others do not. We will gladly
reimburse you any out of pocket expenses.

CMV is a virus most people carry and never know it. Only when an
immune system is completely broken down will the virus take advantage
of the weakened state and cause more harm. Since Ameena is CMV
negative, she must be given platelets that are CMV negative because
Chemo has already wiped out her immune system.

Blood donors can be CMV negative or positive, blood is radiated
therefore it removes almost all diseases and virus', but platelets
can't be radiated.

Donating blood is 15 to 20 minute process. You must be 17 years or
older and weight at least 110 pounds. A blood donor can only donate
blood once every 8 weeks. But blood only lasts 3 weeks so we will need
at least 6 blood donors. A donor can expect to donate once every 8
weeks.

Donating platelets is a longer process, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Since they take your blood, remove the platelets and put your blood
back in, a person can donate platelets every two to three days. But
Platelets only last 5 days. So if we find CMV negative donors they
might have to donate once a week. If we find 4 then the donor might be
able to donate 1 every month.. Inshallah.

For people in the Bay Area I hope to set up an account with American
Red Cross. I will set up a schedule to ensure we always have blood and
platelets "on tap" for her. When you donate there, tell them this is
Donor Directed Blood for Ameena Mooers at Children's Los Angeles
(CHLA). Her name must be spelled correctly, or they wont sent her the
blood. Her last name is a tricky spelling. The idea is you can donate
there, and the blood transfer will happen between the American Red
Cross and CHLA, and it will be paid for. We just need you to drop off
some blood or platelets.

Please if you are willing to donate blood, if you are in the A or O
blood groups, if you are CMV negative, if you know brothers or sisters
in the Los Angles area that are willing to get tested and donate, can
you please let me know. Please forward this email on to all your
distribution lists. My phone number is 925-413-2142 (Please leave message).

Jezakum Allah Khair Inshallah. May this beautiful month bring Barakah
to all your loved ones and to mine. Ameen.

Salam,
Shadiah

10-22-05 Update

Salam U Alikum Brothers and Sisters,

I had recently sent an email requesting blood for my daughter Ameena. I had requested blood from either the Bay Area or the LA area. MashAllah, we have had a huge response from all of our brothers and sisters from both the Bay Area and LA. Alhamduallah, what an amazing illustration of how beautiful our Muslim community is, especially during this time of need.

In my attached note I had requested blood from the Bay Area. It turns out that it would cost about $300 to transfer blood from the Bay Area to LA (every three weeks), and $700 to transfer platelets twice a week. We didn?t realize it would be so expensive and therefore can?t afford to transfer blood from the Bay Area to LA.

SubhanAllah, Allah has provided us with the introduction of an amazing Muslim community in LA and has sent us blood donors, as well as the start of some amazing friendships, Alhamduallah. Just a few days ago a beautiful sister named Neveen came to the hospital and donated blood. We therefore have blood for Ameena until the 3rd of November. We still need blood donors, from the LA area, but the people that have contacted me have brothers, sisters, spouses and friends. Alhamduallah.

I want to sincerely thank all the brothers and sisters that have called, and emailed to let us know that they would help us in our time of need. Sisters that were pregnant, others anemic, and so many more have shown so much support. Jezakum Allah Khair. Allah is Great, and Islam is Great. May your intentions to help us be rewarded in this life and the next as though you have done this and more.

So please send this email to all your distribution lists to let them know the LA Muslim Community has been amazing and has been helping us with our need for blood, and our need to feel part of a community. Inshallah Allah will also send us platelet donors from this area.

Thank you so much. May Allah reward you this life and the next, May Allah spare you this test, May Allah protect those you love and fill your lives with Barakah and Noor. Ameen.

Please keep Ameena in your dua?s.

Salam U Alikum, Shadiah, Dahoud, and Ameena.
