A Long Way Down

I know it just came out days ago, but anybody read Nick Hornby's new one, A Long Way Down, yet?

Or any thoughts on Nick's stuff generally? ALWD is entertaining and thoughtful as always, but it hasn't made me laugh out loud on the tube (like About A Boy did) or sit for half-an-hour staring at the blank endpage letting the ending sink in (like How To Be Good)...

I've started reading A LONG WAY DOWN and love it so far. Since I'm sneaking it into usual work reading (which means that I only get to read the book on my commute to and from work), it'll take me a while to finish it, but it's classic Hornby, in my opinion. He once again creates funny characters. This time, he writes about a situation that may easily veer off into the schmaltzy and contrived and makes it real, warm and witty. I highly recommend it (and not only because my company publishes it in the States).

Ah, c'mon... Shatner's so uncool he actually comes back around on himself and is utterly, utterly cool. Blame postmodernism. Which is how I suspect Hornby views him...!

well it seems as if hornby likes shatner. so that must mean that hornby wouldn't like you.

is that out already? i'll go pick it up if it is. you either love his novels or hate them. personally, i thought high fidelity was better as a book, but that's just me. the track that nick hornby wrote for william shatner's newest album was fabulous. it was a short story about a man reuniting with his estranged daughter.
