A Real Shia/Sunni Discussion
Assalamu Alaikum,
Having discussion and dialog between Sunnis and Shiahs is a beautiful idea, but there have to be some rules to this discussion. I'll list just a few:
1. Please do not make personal attacks on anyone. Personal attacks are the resort of someone who does not have anything intellectual to contribute.
2. Please discuss the points that are raised, instead of taking the conversation to irrelevant points.
3. Please cite from Quran, hadith, tafsir, etc. whenever something is argued.
There are some conditions that are not necessary to have a good dialog, yet some people still insist on them. Some of them are:
1. Some say you need to know Arabic. Do you need to know Arabic to believe in Allah, the Prophet (S), the Quran, afterlife, etc.? Do you need to know Arabic to be considered a Muslim? Obviously someone who does not speak Arabic but accepts Islam was able to arrive at the right conclusions without knowing Arabic. Therefore he/she would be able to argue his/her reasons for belief without having to know Arabic. So please DO NOT accuse someone of ignorance if they don't know Arabic. Base all arguments on their own merit, not the merit of the individual who presents them.
2. Some say you need to be a scholar. You don't need to be a scholar to have a discussion, you simply have to know what you are discussing. If the discussion revolves around your belief and why you accepted it, then you must have had some reason to accept whatever belief you hold, and that is what you are discussing. But if you don't know about something then please don't argue for or against it, but seek more knowledge about it.
Having made these brief statements, I'd like to see if we can have a civil and intellectual discussion free from insults. Our purpose is not to divide but to seek knowledge and truth, and having this as our intention will lead us to the right path, insha Allah.
