Afghan Conversion Incident
Prevent another reason for Islamophobia .......
Short version:
Recent Afghani Christian convert incident + biased media = Untrue and unfavorable view of Islam.

Long version:
I am sure all of us heard the recent story about the Afghani man who has converted to Christianity from Islam. Its sad that this innocent man has to go through all this because of his personal beliefs.
Various newspapers have had stories and one I remember seeing on CNN (though I can't seem to find it now) had a title something like, "Muslim clerics say kill converted Christian Afghan"..... or some version of that.
A quote by probably a few clerics was attributed to all "muslim clerics" or worse to all Muslims. Now the story is changing as the man is in the process of being released but the damage is obviously already done. We should all remember that each little story adds to the bias and the views people hold of Islam.
But here is our chance to do some positive work.
Instead of spending the next ten minutes on some random discussion here, why don't all of usl..... each one of us.... use the below as a template and write letters to the editors of our local papers in 'clarification' of such stories which I am sure was run all over the press everywhere.
Take a few moments and defend your religion both from the misinformation of the media here and the small minority that make such stupid and damaging statements.
The days when you had to print something, put it in an envelope, find a stamp and then work your way to the mailbox are gone.
It will literally take each of us probably no more than ten minutes to come up with something to send(you can even use the exact template below). And it will only take a few minutes for each one of us to find the local paper's website and a story on this incident and write to the editor referencing the story.
So please take those ten minutes...... if not for yourself, then for Islam and your future generation.

Dear Editor:
This is in reference to the recent news story about the Afghani man who was condemned to death by some Muslim clerics in Afghanistan.
Like everyone in the U.S. and the world over, I am utterly apalled by the statements of these so called clerics. The true acceptance of Islam is a personal decision within the heart of an individual and is not something that can be forced.
To simply kill anyone who chooses to follow a religion other than Islam is against the fundamental teachings of the Quran, the Holy book of Muslims. In their ignorance, these clerics and others are defaming a religion that makes the following statements related to the freedom of religion:
"If it had been the will of your Lord that all the people of the world should be believers, all the people of the earth would have believed! Would you then compel mankind against their will to believe?" The Holy Quran, 10:99.
"(O Prophet) proclaim: 'This is the Truth from your Lord. Now let him who will, believe in it, and him who will, deny it.' " The Holy Quran, 18:29.
"Let there be no compulsion in religion." The Holy Quran, 2:256.
I hope your readers know that the Muslims in the U.S. and the majority of the one billion Muslims in this world stand united with them in the condemnation of such violent and hate filled speech.

My opinion is that it could only have been at the time of the Prophet (pbuh) that death could have been mandated as you were leaving the religion when you had the Prophet (pbuh) himself right there as proof of the message.
Even if countries follow shariah today, it is my opinion that the above ayahs supercede the verdict of punishment by death in such cases. The person cannot be punished in this life but must just meet his maker when it is his/her time and face the punishment at that time like the rest of us.
