Al-Ghazali

I just recently watched a documentary on Imam Al-Ghazali...the muslim world is lucky to have had a person of his intelligence and nature to have lived...

Although I havent read his writings yet, there was a little mention in the movie about his interest in psych. For example, he talked of 4 perceptual levels, the lowest being sensual perception, and so on. It was on the verge of philosophy and psychology but I felt it was very close to the stuff early psychologists dealt with. Al-Ghazali was very interested in the psyche and often talked of the self etc. I was interested to see this topic being a part of the philosophy of Islam - especially with one of the most celebrated scholars of Islam.

Does anyone know more of Al-Ghazali? I think he would be very useful to study in the sense of early eastern psychology. Anyone have any additional thoughts? or knowledge perhaps?

I read long ago, I would add another name Imam Razi. Modern Western psychologist had adopted many theories of these two geniuses

Imam Ghazali(ra) was a great scholar of Islam. He wrote the fabulous Ihya Ulum ad-Din which consists of 40 books that deal with purification of the heart, psychology of desire and human behaviour.

Hamza Yusuf's current book Purification of the Heart, for which I provide some notes in my JEs is based on the work of Imam Mawlud(ra) who's work in turn was based on Ihya Ulum ad-Din by Imam Ghazali(ra).

Alhamdulillah, once again this is becoming a field of growing interest. :)
