Allah's love is different........
I recently attended the ICNA (Islamic Conference of North America) in Connecticut, and it was a wonderful experience. There were a lot of beautiful and inspiring lectures, and I would like to share a few things.
Not too long ago, I remember questioning my mother and a very close friend how if Allah loved us 70 times more than our mothers, He could make us go through pain-emotional or physical. Our mothers cannot see us in pain at all, and yet Allah made some people go through a lot.
And here?s how Allah answered my question. One of the most impressive speakers was Shaikh Mokhtar Maghraoui, a PhD in Physics from Syracuse University. His lectures were based on Purification of the Heart. He said that Allah?s love was different from our perception of love. If He loved someone and wanted him to draw closer to Him, He would afflict him with pain. Because its human nature to feel closest to the Creator in a time of distress; one feels helpless and turns to Allah most humbly for help. If a beggar goes to the door of a generous man, he will keep knocking on the door only till he gets food or money; and then he will go away. Allah wants His beloved creatures to stay at His doorstep.
Once a man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked him how he would know what Allah had meant for him when he was going through a rough patch
1) whether it was a punishment from Allah
2) or it was a means of atonement for his previous sins
3) or Allah loved him and wanted him to draw nearer to Him
The Prophet (pbuh) replied that it depended on his response. If he cried and became upset, it was a punishment. If he bore it with patience and accepted it as Allah?s Will, it would serve as an atonement for his sins. If he actually thanked Allah for the affliction, it would draw him nearer to the Creator.
I can go on, but would end with this incident. Shaikh Mokhtar Maghraoui mentioned how two very pious and extremely poor students found out that the prices of all groceries had gone up. One friend said to the other, ?How are we going to make ends meet now, we will starve to death!? The other replied very calmly, ?Don?t worry, we will figure out a way. Allah doesn?t love us that much to make us go through such a hardship?.
Personally, I don?t think we should pray to Allah for affliction so we can draw closer to Him. But this is what a muslim?s attitude should be if he is afflicted. We should always ask for His Mercy.
My favourite dua is:
? Rabana atina fey ad-dunia hasanah wa fey al-akhairatty hasanah waqanaaddab annar.?(2:201). Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Hellfire.
