Any Mechanics (or even people who know how to change oil)

Salaam. Are there any mechanics here? Or atleast anyone who know how to change the oil. Seems like Car mechanics who work for stores/dealers are SO EXPENSIVE. If anyone in Chicago-land knows how to work on cars (especially BMW M3's), please let me know.

I want to learn how to change oil, do minor work, etc. I am willing to pay if someone is willing to teach me. Thanks so much. Or if someone just wants to help, I can buy lunch or so. Thanks.

gundamn, i think you get huge fines for draining your oil that way... you have to get rid of the oil in a collection place.

oh, one nice advantage of my minivans... it's high enough off the ground that you dont' have to raise the vehicle at all. VERY convenient. I hate having you raise the vehicle, I'm always scared that it'll roll back. oh AND NEVER USE A JACK TO RAISE THE VEHICLE. it's just not stable enough to let you work under the car.

yeah, definitely get yourself a manual. Helms, Hanes manual, whatever. they describe everything. apparently they take cars apart and put them back together for that manual, with nice pics. that's how I learned how to work on my old falling-apart mercedes.

Aaks38, thank you SO MUCH for your help. You have made it look easy. I cant wait to try out your instructions. Thanks again dude! I cant tell you how much I appreciate this. However, I will refer to the manual to find out exactly where the oil plug nut and other stuff is. Thanks again.

Well ive been changing oil for the last 18 years in my cars..... first and foremost, it starts with safety. If you have a M3, get some Rhino ramps and wheel chocks. Drive the car upon the ramps(front wheels obviously), put in first, shut off the engine and apply the parking brake, place the chocks behind the rear wheels. It would be nice to have the car warmed up at the point you shut off the engine. Now what you want to do is to find the oil plug located on the oil pan itself. Put a oil pan under the oil plug nut, and undo the plug slowly and be prepared for hot oil to start flowing. As you completely remove the plug, it will ooze out and wait about 10 minutes to completely trickle. Then reinstall the oil plug with a new copper washer or the washer recommended by BMW. You can reuse the old one but i wouldnt recommend over 2 oil changes. Make sure when you tighten the plug, to torque it to spec, im going to say it will be between 25-30ft lbs. Then undo the oil filter and make sure the oil pan is now located directly under it. You can usually do it by hand if your a strong fellow otherwise you may beed a oil filter wrench/cap. When you remove it, oil will also trickle out. Id say wait about 5 minutes and then take the new oil filter, and run some new oil around the gasket ring. Install it and as soon as it comes into contact with the block, tighten 1/5 turn (some are slightly more or less). Now you have removed all the old oil and are ready to pour the new oil into the engine. Pop open the hood, and remove the oil cap. Install a funnel over the oil cap opening and fill the engine with the quantity recommended in the user manual. Im going to say it will be around 5 quarts on a beemer but check the manual as it varies from car to car. After you pour in all the oil. PUT ON THE OIL CAP! Now start the car up and inspect around the oil pan nut and filter to make sure no oil leaks....always double check your work! take the old oil and put it into a sealed container or reuse the bottles the new oil came in ....remove the chocks and drive the car back down the ramps...this is just a general way to change oil in most cars, youll probably want to refer to a service manual or look on the net at a m3 site, im sure someone has posted the exact procedure..good luck...

It's really simple. Go to any auto parts store and grab a helms manual which will describe how to do most things on a car. Good luck!

RH, the point is I want to learn (along with saving $$$). If someone can teach me how to change brakes, change oil, etc I would like to do myself. It will save me $$$ at mechanics, that annoying 45 min wait, and most of all I will feel comfortable working on my car.
