I just figured it out...we are or most of us work in the non-profit world meaning we work a lot of hours for not much financial reward but the reward is much deeper and higher from a personal and spirtual aspect. Given this we are work a holics trying to make the world a better place so not as much time is left to do other things. That must be the answer as I can't think of anything else. Still even if we are work aholics we should be able to learn from each others expirence If one has a chance come here once a week or twice a week and post something. Just a thought.
I am not sure if you are still here---but if you want advice on nonprofits I may be able to help. In NYC, I am not sure but if you tell me what you want to do I can try to give you some advice.
i wanna be in the non profit educational field. as i (one day) will be a teacher. currently starting a new non profit org for muslim political awareness in the country and thus for them to take a hot seat and active participation rather than sit back and be told what would happen.

i'm in the field of non profit and just want to learn more about other missions and initiatives that are out there, and perhaps even develop some new ideas, etc...
the training I do is developed around the needs of my clients. It can range doing exactally what Izmael said social workers wanting to know how to better service a community to police officers wanting to understand cultural senstivties and differences as well as simliarties that could led to miscommunication and a dangerous situation. I work with corporations, schools, government agencies, non-profits, hospitals, etc. in this type of cross-cultural communication training. Most of my training work is education but I do some translating at times, and I don't only focus on cultural trainngs as I do issues campaigning for a few non-profits like Oxfams Make Trade Fair campaign to end extreme poverty and hunger (see maketradefair.com or oxfamamerica.org)
it can mean a number of things, but, primarily, cross cultural training programs may raise cultural awareness, provide communications training either by teaching a language or providing translations, and a host of other inter cultural components. for instance, let's say iraqi refugees move to a town in wyoming where no one speaks arabic. a trainer may come in to teach an american team of social workers how to better serve that population. you don't have to be involved to want to know more. it's cool beans.
modernsitalbait: what kind of cross cultural training programs are you involved it? i'm working on a cross training program between community service providers (who provide for individuals with disabilities) and womens shelters.
