Arab Criticism of Muslim Extremist Activities in the West

Source : memri.org

Extremist Muslims in Western countries have come under increasing criticism by moderate Muslims who are familiar with the West through living in America or Europe, either temporarily or permanently. In three recently published articles, Arab academic and intellectuals harshly criticized their extremist activities.

In his article on the reformist website elaph.com, Dr. Ahmad Abu Matar, a Palestinian academic residing in Oslo, stated that Muslims in Europe foster conflict instead of coexistence. Muslims in Europe, he explained, are influenced by an extremist fundamentalist brand of Islam ? and moderate Muslims are not speaking out adequately against this activity.

In the UAE daily Al-Itihad, Saudi journalist Turki Al-Dakhil, whose popular interview program on Al-Arabiyya television frequently hosts reformist Muslims, wrote about the hatred of the West that is spread by Muslims in the U.S., sharing his personal experience during his studies in the U.S. around the time of 9/11.

In the wake of Al-Dakhil's article, Tarek Hamo, a Kurdish journalist living in Germany, also criticized the actives of extremist Muslims in the West. In his article in elaph.com, Hamo accused Arab and Muslim states that seek to appease the extremists and to keep them away from political activity in their own countries, as well as the European host countries that are turning a blind eye to extremist activity ? on grounds of "tolerance" and "religious freedom," and more recently, on grounds of a "dialogue of civilizations."

The following are excerpts from the three articles:

Muslims in Europe Foster Conflict, Not Coexistence

Dr. Ahmad Abu Matar wrote: "The presence of Muslims of all nationalities, and especially those of Arab nationality, has become a palpable phenomenon in all of the EU countries, and in Western Europe in particular. In some of these countries, like France, for instance, they number more than five million, and in many countries they have centers, institutions, and activities that they cannot sustain in their own Arab and Muslim countries."

As an example of activities conducted in the West that are not permitted in Arab countries, Abu Matar mentioned the Islamic Liberation Party, which "announces from London its political platform ?to establish the Islamic caliphate over all corners of the earth ? and declares that the party will suggest to the Queen of England that she convert to Islam, and thus will not have to pay the Islamic poll tax on non-Muslims ." As another example he cited the activities of Abu Hamza Al-Masri, the imam of Finsbury Park Mosque in London, who called for jihad and suicide bombings in Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The third example he gave is the thousands of mosques and Islamic charitable organizations in Europe and America that publicly collect contributions, and in addition, receive annual budgets from European countries.

In light of the freedom of movement and action and the freedom to proselytize enjoyed by Muslims in Europe, Abu Matar assessed the behavior of Muslims, and especially Arabs, in the continent. According to him, "the last five years have been decisive in shaping the image of the Muslim Arab in Europe. Because of the incidents and practices that the European continent has experienced, the image of the Arab Muslim in the European lexicon has become: a terrorist who murders without a conscience or any human feeling...

"The European citizen has begun to feel that Europe has become a target for Islamic terrorism, particularly of the Arab type, because of the crimes he has witnessed ? in reality, and not in the imagination or in a horror movie. Even screenwriters and directors of horror movies wouldn't conceive of some of these actions.

"It doesn't help that alongside these actions, say that Islam forbids such actions and that their perpetrators are damaging Islam, since the actions are accompanied by a theological doctrine by those who claim to speak in the name of over a billion Muslims, and especially the triumvirate of Bin Laden, Al-Zarqawi, and Al-Zawahiri.

"None of the Arab or Muslim religious legal authorities responded to them or cast doubt on their legitimacy as representatives of Islam. On the contrary, there are fatwa s from scores of ulama supporting these actions..."

Abu Matar cited a number of examples of crimes committed by Muslims in Europe and pointed to the public incitement to violence in mosques. He mentioned the case of Nur Al-Din Kaplan, whom a German court in Berlin decided to deport because of his incitement to violence and suicide bombings. The latter went into hiding, and for weeks the German police have been searching for him.

Another example is an open letter published by Ayman Al-Zawahiri in the summer of 2003, encouraging Muslim youth to attack European and American targets. Abu Matar adds that the Islamic proselytizer in Denmark, Said Mansour, goes a similar path, and distributes a cassette among the Muslims encouraging them to join Al-Zarqawi in Iraq.

"This immoral incitement," says Abu Matar, prompted the murder of the Dutch cinema director Van Gogh in November, 2004, by a young Dutchman of Moroccan origin. According to Abu Matar, "the incident only occurred because of the incitement in which the young murderer lived, the incitement of sheikhs who do not fear Allah and who consider everyone whose opinion differs from theirs to be an enemy of Islam."

In conclusion, Abu Matar states that Muslims in Europe promote conflict and do not encourage coexistence. "As a result of these actions... millions of the new generation of Muslims in Europe have become a source of fear and anxiety for decision-makers in European countries. This is because the new generation has fallen under the influence of extremist fundamentalists who interpret Islam as they see fit, and also because enlightened scholars and intellectuals haven't made a parallel intellectual effort to counter the extremist and deviant intellectual efforts of the fundamentalists."

"In their extremism, are preventing the new generation of Muslims from internalizing the principles of freedom and enlightenment that have existed in European societies for over a century.

" enabled European societies to develop in every sphere and led to the humanistic tolerance that made Muslim presence in Europe possible....

" this tolerance, Christians living in Arab countries have been forbidden for generations to build churches, except within tiresome conditions, and especially in Egypt ? the land of the Copts.

"What will these millions do in the Arab countries if the European countries, Canada, and the U.S. were to expel them? I say 'if' since these countries cannot expel them, not because they are afraid of the Muslims, but because their laws don't allow it...

"From what has been said here, one may conclude that those who speak falsely in the name of Islam have turned the Islamic presence in Europe and America into a presence of conflict instead of coexistence..."

Allah Treated Us Mercifully When He Did Not Stop the Blood in the Veins of the Jews and Christians So They Protected Us after 9/11

In his article titled "Oh Allah, Curse Them," Turki Al-Dakhil wrote: "An American friend of Arab origin told me that he went with his 13-year-old son to a demonstration for the Palestinian cause, held in a U.S. city. Everything went well until one of the demonstrators, in the grip of enthusiasm, took the U.S. flag and set it alight. My friend said to me: This instance saddened me, but I intentionally turned a blind eye ? while my son commented that it was not fitting to thus treat the flag whose citizens we are?

"As soon as I heard the story I remembered the imam of the mosque where I attended Friday prayers when I studied in the northwestern U.S. The imam was an American of Palestinian origin, and it seemed to me that he thought a sermon was pointless unless he cursed the Jews and Christians every week.

"I saw native-born Americans who had joined Islam not long ago, and mused at the curse applying to them, harming their parents and sometimes their wives, and their friends and co-workers.

"A few months later came the catastrophic events of 9/11. I met with a group of students from the Gulf states in the city where we were studying, and we discussed what we could do regarding our apprehensions about American reactions? We agreed that we would not go anywhere alone and would wait until the coming Friday ? the first after the events.

", when the young Arabs reached the street where the mosque was, their hearts were beating like that of a sprinter. Their pulses quickened when they saw groups of Americans surrounding the mosque. They drew closer in dread ? to discover that the groups were Christian organizations and 'hippies' who wanted to protect the Arab and Muslim worshipers from any attack that might occur as a reaction by Americans to raid on Manhattan.

"The sight was melodramatic. Those same people whom our imam customarily cursed every Friday and whom he asked Allah to exterminate, orphan their children, and widow their wives ? and, when he was really fired up, whose blood he would also ask Allah to dry up in their veins ? these same people came to serve as a human shield for our prayers.

"I remember that most of the worshipers believed, like parrots, the calls of the imam who angered me. I confess that I was too cowardly to oppose them in public, settling for conversations in closed rooms with some of my colleagues.

"But I thanked Allah greatly that he did not answer the calls of our imam? The American presence continued every Friday for the next five or six weeks, and the governor joined them.

"Allah treated us mercifully when he did not stop the blood in the veins , and did not curse them or orphan their children?"

Muslim Teachers are Spreading Hatred of the Infidel West Among Immigrant Muslim Children

Tarek Hamo, a Kurdish journalist residing in Germany, writes from a personal perspective: "In my many travels connected to my job in the Arab department of the Kurdish television channel... I meet many Islamists who, the moment they identify a Middle Eastern face, run to me, motivated by lust for religious preaching and dispiritedly talk of 'the state of the Muslim nation.'

"During the conversation (which develops the moment you respond to their greeting), you see that these people are bearing a tremendous amount of hatred for Europe and its culture (in which they live in dignity). Most of them, unfortunately, supported and still support Al-Qa'ida terrorism in New York, Madrid, and Baghdad?

"Once, a Turkish imam approached me as I traveled on an express train to Brussels. After I indicated to him that he might sit down, he began to lament 'the state of the Muslim nation' and the 'deeds of the infidel West' and the Muslim rulers connected to it (who also, were certainly of Jewish-Crusader origin).

"When I asked him for his view on Turkey's joining the European Union and its ramifications for the Turks and their future, he stood up and said: 'This is a crusader plan, and its aim is the identity and history of the Turkish nation. Ultimately they ? that is, the Westerners ? want to meld the Muslims into the Christian region, and to conduct missionary activity amongst them.' In order to prevent this and to repel the 'Crusader attack,' he said, 'There is no substitute for establishing an Islamic caliphate.'

"After finishing his speech? he began to tell me about his work as a teacher of Muslim children in a German city, and how he makes them understand 'Islam and its fundamentals' and stresses to them 'the obligation not to assimilate into infidel German society, and to preserve their religion and identity'?

"This example is one of many, since many teach the children of Muslim immigrants the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam (which usually causes terrorism). They are sent from their countries by their organizations, and understand not a word of the host country's language? Their goal is to spread hostility and hatred among the Muslim workers and refugees, and to push them towards stories of religious wars and the atmosphere of 'the global conspiracy against the Muslims.'

"The ones responsible for the existence of these are the Arab and Muslim countries that capitulated to the madness of the religious groups? and set their curricula in accordance with the desires of these groups, in order to appease them and to distance them from thinking of politics and 'earthly matters' .

"Also responsible for this are the European countries? that turned a blind eye to their suspicious religious activity, on grounds of tolerance and religious freedom ? and, more recently, on grounds of 'dialogue between civilizations.'

"Thus we see Mr. Tarek Ramadan, who participates in dialogue conferences with Muslims in the West, preaching 'European Islam.' Do you understand what European Islam is? This 'Islam' is not very different from the European Islam once offered by the Turkish fundamentalist leader Nijmuddin Erbakan when he clarified wholeheartedly: 'Our aim is to put down roots in the European continent, and to act quietly and in accordance with the laws, so that one day we may see all of Europe Muslim!'?"

Something I found on UN Website www.un.org.

Even UN agrees that the present day Israel has forcefully occupied 71% of the territory, which would not have been possible if Palestinian leadership in 1940s could accept the partition plan and would have focused more on nation building than on violence.

As far as Palestine is concerned, you know much better than I do. I was reading some where that if Palestinian leadership had agreed to the partition plan suggested by the UN in 1948, the Palestianian terroritory would have been bigger than Israeli territory (Correct me if my facts are wrong as I don't remember the source) the parity at that time was 55:45 where 55% was for Palestine. Even in Quran Jews are called "Bani Israel" or "Inhabitant of Israel", if it was not the brutal persecution of Jews in Europe during WWII probably there would not have been this much emphasis to allow them to return to the land where they belong where they can live in peace without any fears of persecution. One persons profit can be another person's loss, unfortunately Muslims and Palestinians were at the losing end. That loss didn't take place in a day or two, it was a constant decay which was going on for generations. The problem is nobody tries to find the root causes of that decay, we just blame others for our problems and would turn to extreme form of violence which sometimes clearly violates even Quran and Sunnah. What we need right now is a silent moment to figure out what we are and what we have become, but with all this noise we have created around us it is getting harder and harder to hear that voice within, thats what our solution is. Not this useless violence which is going on for decades and which seems never ending.

i'm sure you realize the borken leg analogy is not a single generational issue. It is an analogy, A crippled nation does not heal after the original insult unless it is given a chance to do so. A retaliatory broken leg serves no one, but may give the injured party a chance to heal. There are better ways, but agreeing to run the race on a broken leg is definetly not the answer. perhaps we should demand a wheelchair, or, probably much better, a chance to heal on our own without their constant intrussions and ubiquitous influence. But running a race for our live and lands, our people and our futures, on their terms after they've broken our leg? only a fool would do so.

Breaking leg, interesting analogy. What if the person who broke your leg tells you he is doing this because your father or grandfather broker his father's or grandfather's leg and this is just the answer to that earlier leg breaking?

people will only sit at a table when the powerful accept the claims of the weak. And the only time the powerful do that, is when the weak prove they are no longer weak, either by having strong allies, or by making themselves too much of a neusance to dominate. It seems you request the weak to change their ways rather than the strong. The strong will demand the weak to bow. The weak kowtowing will gain them nothing. Extrimists do not control the islamic perspective, you don't have to be an extremist to look at the world and see all the abuses against the muslims, africans and south americans, and who is supporting these abuses. But the strong will stand and demand that these abuses are ignored and forgotten. If i break your leg and demand a fair race with the stakes being your land and your life. and state that focusing on the broken leg is focusing on the past you would be a fool to agree to my terms. anyone who disagree's with the western perspective is not an extremist, but the west sure does like to label them so.

I think you are misunderstanding me. Its such an irony that just how arrogant Bush thinks that "either you are with us or with the terrorists", some among us believe the same way, which is the most unrealistic and illogical approach. The new perspective I believe we need to have is different than what West expects from us and is also different from what extremists expect from us. This perspective should take into account all the facts and realities and move forward not backward. We can never solve any problem if we continue this blame game. Whenever there is a conflict a small or big at the end people have to sit on a table and find some resolution in a peaceful manner. So why we can't find that resolution now and why we have to wait several more decades and take several thousand more lives?

how is buying into these arguments an unorthodox angle? the western powers have been mocking the savages for years and years, "they hate us because of our freedoms" yeah thats the reason. not the occuoations, or the support of our pisswater overlords, not that, it's freedom we hate. we're backwords, superstitious dirty animals, and God knows what else yeah, we hate democracy and love to oppress women. thats the reason. and your early post says how we enjoy the boons of their religious tolerance, and still we are angered by it. A new perspective is needed. this perspective is not new. in the article itself it state______________________________ ____________ The ones responsible for the existence of these are the Arab and Muslim countries that capitulated to the madness of the religious groups? and set their curricula in accordance with the desires of these groups, in order to appease them and to distance them from thinking of politics and 'earthly matters' .________________________ ______________ ___________________________________ __ the governments used the relgious groups as pawns, and weapons against dissent. now that plan backfires, much like America's use of Saddam backfired. So all of a sudden they go from being the Police of the state to being it's enemy. Thats the nature of controlling the masses. Any country could have created universities, and institutions of higher learning in any form they wished, but they choose to go the route of religious indoctrination. No doubt under the Marxist assumption that Religion is the opiate of the masses. To their dismay they learn that Islam is more of a methamphetamine. It causes people to be angered by injustice and oppression, rather than accept their lot as "God's will". In south american countries people had to leave the church and deny their religions in order to raise up and overthrough their rulers, in Muslim lands they turn to Islam and use their faith as a weapon. They created this extremist monster where none existed before, now they blame the monster itself for its creation? none of these arguments are new. You want a new perspective? think of one, taking on someone elses perspective and making it your own does not make it new. The other head of the same coin is still the same coin.

I needed to add something at the end of that message but my wireless keyboard died and had to restart my computer, so I submitted it without it. "I care less about the source, but I do care about whether or not the material on a given website is factual". All the matter you see in this particular article doesn't seem to exaggerated. You would see these kind of extremist and in some case non-sense propaganda in every second or third mosques and a number of ordinary Muslims would seem to agree with it, because they would think it is something like an article of faith to believe such propaganda.

So as you can see I am not innocent, I am very aware of most of the facts and the history behind the major issues we have. I used to think exactly the same way you are thinking but day by day I am realizing, this is a wrong approach and it would never solve any problem. We need to step back, ponder and realize the situation with a non-orthodox angle, I am sure a solution is out there. As per the evil West or Satan America, you would have enough time to have fun with it once all the issues are resolved.

be aware my inocent friend, the source of your information makes all the difference, facts can be skewed, numbers can lie, history is a weapon to be used by the clever and the quick, sharper than any sword and more destructive than any weapon. If you are looking for information, be aware who is sharing that information. by all means read, but blind trust is folly. the internet especially is completely unmonitored for factual bases, and any doofus with a laptop can set up pages and pages of "fact" and "statistics" that will prove without a doubt that i am a flying squirrel, the earth is flat and you are a professional entymologist. and opinions are by their very nature express a bias, what you posted was an opinion from a site that is very obviously anti-muslim and anti-Palestinian.
___________________________________ _________________________ as far as your comments on government injustice and the actions of the people i am not sure what you are referring to but i agree. a corrupt and evil government doesn't imply evil peoeple. I never said that, nor did i mean to imply it, if i did, i apoligize.

Plato my emphasis is on cohesion and integration with the rest of the society. I care less what mine or someone else's ancestors had been doing. We can never figure out who did what and why, who was right who was wrong as sometimes there is a very fine line. I think we all need to take what the present is in front of us and see how we can make it better. People who were before us, are accountable for their actions and we are accountable for ours. Its not right to have grudges towards anybody just because someone among their ancestors did something wrong to our ancestors or vice versa. Its equally wrong to assume that if some govts have been involved in injustices and opperession, their people are also involved in it, most of the times they are not.

As per source of the article, I usually search articles related to Islam or Muslims from Google news and care less about the source.

yes we have problems in the muslim community and we are far far far from perfect. But placing the blame on the poor bastards who are victems of these unforgivable governments is blamming the victem. You want a clear perspective. Look at what situation these extemists come from, and ask how can the situation be chagned. Give justice to the land, implement educational reform, economic stability and self-sufficiency. Let them choose their governments, their religions, their rulers and their firends. and the problem of extremism will be a forgotten footnote in history. I wish we would accept reality, but a reality of our own, not the one they force upon us. We are not extemists when we call for change, we have been malinged by them, and we seek only justice. In the end, we don't even want that. back off and give us self determination, the past is past, but they chain us to it, and refuse to allow us to leave it and move on. A Palestinian will not forget the occupation if the occupation is still there tomorrow. They are masters of spin, marketing and propaganda, if we buy into it we are lost, our futures are finished. We need change. Inshallah islamic change, but any change is good. The status quo of the west is doing us no favors, i will not kowtow to thier wills, my people are not the enemy. The actions of their nations speak much louder than the words of their leaders.

secondly. the few cited facts in the article are either editorials or quotes. And in either case those people are entitled to their opinions, but these statements and opinions are tangential relevant to this persons claim of infiltrative extremism in our mosques, schools and communities. I will give a big Inshallah to a Muslim Europe without hesitation, just as any Christian would say the same to a Cross-worshipping middle east. Mutual respect and understanding is one thing, believing another persons religion is as valid as your own seems anathema to the idea of religion in general. I'm all for religious tolerance, but Jesus wasn't God, nor his son. period. the opinion that he was is wrong. no question about it. But your "irony" is "ironic" in itself because no muslim is holding a grudge against the US or the tolerant west because of its religious tolerance. Our "grudges" as you call them, are more aptly named Greivances. And we have grievances against their colonialism, their direct support of the same dictators in our nations that will not allow our own religious tolerance, their economic abuses against our nations, and their double standards, and political deciets. They supported iraq against Iran even though iran was the more democratic of the two, They attack Iraq under false pretenses while allowing Israel it's abuse of it's arab population, continued occupation and known posession of WMD. They support Turkish Armies with Helicopters and tanks and statigic information in their campaign against the kurds while arming the kurds against saddam. you call our acknowledgment of htese realities a "grudge?" You are blind if you cannot see. They bombed medicine factories in Sudan because they where suspicious that it was producing weapons, and never paid reparations, and yemmen is sanctioned for decades because people who happen to reside in the nation carried out an attack against american commercial flights? Blind. This is violence against muslim nations. They support the middles easts corrupt, hypocritical, oppressive govenrments, and call on the PEOPLE to chagne??? You want ys to bend our knees, and bow our heads to their puppets?

first off considering what source you pulled this off from, it would be similar to pulling off a report on homosexuals from Pat Robertsons Christian Coalition. So it is suspect if only because those who posted it seem to believe the problems in the middles east only relate to israel as victem.

I have a German roommate, the other day he said something which really moved me. As Germany has a history of nationalism which had quite bloody effects on millions of human lives, he mentioned that in modern Germany kids are taught human values of fairness, justice and tolerance as well as they are taught that its okay to accept if any of our ancestors had made any mistakes. I think we all need to have that in us, we don't need to live in a lalaland that all the Muslims were/are the perfect humans and they never did or never can do anything wrong. If we accept that reality, it would clarify our perspective on so many things in our lives.

Plato, how they say whenever there is a smoke there is fire, I would not disregard most of the facts given in this article. I have personal experiences of similar nature. Its an irony that we enjoy all the freedoms which pluralistic and tolerant western societies offer, but at the same time we hold grudges against the same society which has given us all these freedoms. Religious extremism of any kind, Muslim, Christian, Jewish or else is not good for the society and for the world in general. The only way we can promote peace and harmony is through mutual respect and understanding and end this blame game of who did what.

the source of the article is telling, and it's tone is misleading and biased. muslim teachers spreading hate among their students? fundementalist interpretation is islam causes terrorism? many immigrants teach this to their children? I like it best when they use examples of the anecdotal imam, yeah thats a great cross section of muslim reality, if this person actually exists. Entire books are written this way, and protray themselves as studies of Islam, the Islamic invasion jumps to mind, where the authors increadibly inane conversations with taxi drivers and a waitress are examples of the incoming invasion force of sleeper cell muslims. The article is self-serving egosystonic writting of the author. and in the end it looks like he is calling for a european crackdown on religious leaders who disagree with him and the european governments? yeah, thats great. That'll make everything better. Apparently tolerance and religious freedom is only acceptable if you are toeing the party line. The entire articles seems to believe that there is 1 problem, and apparently these religious nutjobs rose out of a vacuum. This man could be a ghost writter for Pat Roberston, who, i might add, uses the same anecdotal evidence style to make his point about larger populations, and also calls for the death, destruction and imprisonment of arabs in general, palestinians, Iraqis, muslims, hindu's and jews, on a fairly regular basis on his TV show. Where is the christian condemnation of this behavior? probably with the Muslim condemnation of the extrimist groups, ignored by the media, and therefore functionally non-existant. There is constant condemnation of extreemism, in community groups, in mosques, in halaqa's, at conferences. But no one covers it, so this person, and those like him, and enemies of Islam, can sieze on the reports of extremists, and anecdotal, often non-existant tales as all the proof they need to do things like invade nations, restrict rights, imprison people for years without legal process, slaughter innocents, occupy nations, set up road blocks, ethnically cleanse entire populations and annex land belonging to muslims with the support of their ignorant followers. idiotic smiles all around, lets all cheer for one demagouge calling for the expulsion of the other.
