Are tall guys envied by shorter guys?!

If you are a tall guy, do you think shorter guys envy your height?! I just thought of posting this because this guy who is a good family friend of ours, is ALWAYS trying to walk 'TALLER' to the point that I sometimes think his neck is going to fall off his body. He is about 5'6'' which isn't too short, but we all know that when he was younger, he used to take Growth Hormones and whats even funnier, he used to hang upside down from a metal bar in his basement in hopes of growing taller. The question that I really want to ask would be better suited for guys who are short which is pointless in this village so I'll reword it to apply to tall guys.

Do you find that by being tall, you are at an advantage in finding a potential spouse as compared to a short guy!?! I'm sure guys can be competitive amongst themselves (probably secretly) so do you ever feel that you are 'better' than another guy because you are taller.

Anyways....I just thought of asking the question because that guy who used to hang himself upside down in hopes of growing taller came to our house yesterday for Eid and just seeing him makes me laugh because I imagine him dangling from a metal bar for hours (Awww bechara, I actually feel sorry for him that he has SUCH a complex about his height). I just wonder if the 'height' factor really is that big a deal for most guys...or just some.

just want to make it clear that i don't necessarily agree with the fact taht being taller equates to being more attractive, Its just the way it is in western culture hence it can partly explain why taller people are generally more successful in the workplace.

Arzee....I agree with the 'supposedly' part, I was starting to think myself that you must be a real ghita admee in real life :P

Fati I agree with you, I know that in the teaching profession, being taller gives you a greater presence in the classroom which is important. I think being 'tall' goes hand in hand with being 'attractive' because western culture defines being tall as being more attractive than being short. Why else is it necessary for super models to be a specific height.....

hmmm i think for men height is a def advantage! though i think for women height is a disadvantage. lets face it...among desi's at least...great height isn't a common trait. i feel that i'm taller than a good 80-90% of the desi male pop...which is limiting ... (if you limit yourself to desi's that is ) or only to taller men (i could be into a shorter but hella cool guy!). but arzee i must respond to you...the only way to really make your point that tall ppl aren't at an advantage is take a randomized sample. heheeh. there are studies out there that say taller ppl are more successful in the workplace... just as more attractive ppl are...

I have neither studied nor researched the subject but have learnt the following through interaction with others over the years...

Growing up, i never paid attention to height...I was told some years ago that to be the leader of an organization, you need to be tall...i was told that most presidents of the us are tall (is that true?)

In my own family, height was a major issue when my siblings were looking to get married...I found their obsession to be absurd..

Over the years, I have noticed that my bosses that were shorter than me have tried to establish their authority harder than others...I do find some people to be envious..

Most women between 5'0" and 5'4" are looking for a guy who is at least 6'0"? That's not fair - surely the pool of tall guys has shrunk enough as it is? ;) On a more serious note, thanks for the info about envy... I wasn't aware of those two categories.

Taugi!!! Excellently put!! I also don't think that ANYONE should envy someone else.......according to Islam only 2 types of people should EVER be envied. 1) THe person who has alot of wealth and spends that wealth in the name of Allah 2)THe person who has alot of knowledge and uses that knowledge for good and teaches others about Islam.

The only reason why I even decided to share this VE was because It baffled me that someone would go to such lengths such as hanging upside down just to be taller........like Taugi said, everything has its advantages and disadvantages........lets just learn to be grateful, Inshallah. I also don't think that a person should feel that they are better than anyone else, if you are tall.....be happy and grateful for it, but in no way does it make a person better, because along with its advangtages, there are disadvantages as well.......so it all equals out.

well, i truly feel sorry sometimes for short desi men in particular, but short men in general. i for one have no issues with the height of a man. i am 5'9 and at various stages in my life have considered men from the range of heights. 5'2 all the way to 7'. so i think this puts me in a fair position to say what i am saying now.

unfortunately for the short men, MOST women, (and if you are one of them i am not hating on you, just making a statement) would never consider a man shorter than they are. furthermore, most women who i know (between 5'0-5'4) are looking for guys who are at least 6'. well, i dont have many statistics in front of me, but SOMEONE, is gonna be a$$-out. and its too bad.

now why do i feel sorry? i feel sorry because i feel that they are up against a challenge which doesnt even consider reason. flat out refusing someone because of his/her height is outlandish (immho) and is so limiting. so to know that these men never even had a shot at someone (not someone, MOST women! because the average height of american women is 5'5; average height of desi americans is 5'2) is sad. if you take into consideration the other factors that play into compatibility and run numbers on them, it just shows that your chances of finding compatibility become smaller and smaller.

now, my great judge said to me the other day (being ever so wise), 'well, if they denied you without looking at your entire repertoire, they are not good enough to have you anyway!'. well said.

ok, and i know this query was about envy and i didnt really address it so i will now. i dont think ANYONE should envy anyone else. with height comes issues too. so we 'tall folk' are no better off in the bigger picture. we have advantages where others lack; and others have advantages where we lack. in the end, it all becomes just about even.

so i am happy and my sexy, hot friend who is 5'4 should be happy too!

Salaams and Eid Mubarrak to all.

I sincerely believe that tall guys have some advantage in finding future spouses.. Correct me if I'm wrong ladies, but most girls non-muslim or muslim prefer a guy who is taller and bigger than her... I think this is just natural thing for a woman to seek... similarly, most men prefer a shorter or petite woman.

In terms of rishtas, I've been told by many of my friends and relatives that I should have no problem getting married cause I'm tall and an engineer... Honestly, I dont know how much weight this statement holds cause I'm still single! However, being a tall guy is not a disadvantage, it does give you more options for sure.. being 6 feet plus opens of the options of speaking to girls that are 5 "10 or shorter.. if you're only 5 "6 than you are limited to 5 "4 and less..Of course there are exceptions to all this..

I think any short guy probably wishes he was taller... Whether they envy us or not.. i'm not sure..but than most people can probably list qualities they wish they could change about themselves, weight, body type, intelligence... point being that everyone has things that they wish were different about them...At the end, I think more doors open up for you if you are a tall guy, but its not a defining characteristic that will help you close the deal.

Faisal
