Arms Control
ok, so Gym and I are on again (it's been a tumultuous on-and-off relationship, i tell ya).
after reading a ton of workout mags (oh, and VEs too!), i still have a few quasi-dumb questions.
in regard to WOMEN toning their arms, which would be a 'better' approach: lifting 5-8lbs continuoulsly till you cant lift at all, or the 3 sets of 12 sorta thing? and if doing the sets thing, how much 'repair' time delay should one take?
one of my colleagues does a 'lift-till-you-cant-lift-no-mo' and it seems kinda effective? im kinda inclined towards this b/c i personally find it annoying counting secs in between reps.

you probably done something else on the arms before that, or you maxed it out. either way its ok. i cant even hold up a 5kg barbel after ive finished.
its not about how much you can lift, rather your technique (unless ofcourse you want to be a weighlifter). if your doing high reps, keep the weights low.
I like to increase the weight too, but if i cant complete my set of x reps, i drop the weight and continue, if i still cant do it, i drop the weight more. try that.
Usually when you increase the weight you're using in subsequent sets, the # of reps' decreases... to maximize the workout (work till fatigue per set, efficiently; ie. 12-10-8).
Otherwise, all seems fine... we have our good days at the gym & then we have our avg. days at the gym in terms of performance!
We went from 8 pounds in each to 10 pounds to 12. I was upset with myself that I couldn't do it 20 times like I did with the two lighter weights. My arms just wouldn't lift up enough.
So, is that a weight I should easily be able to do, or am I just not strong enough? :-
oh yes, and you won't bulk up! women simply don't. you'd need to really be eating a certain way and taking supplements to look like a female body builder.
i think its better to do sets, that way you are affecting that muscle more than just testing your stamina on one long set.
You dont need to really count the time between sets, unless your paying a personal trainer, i would suggest u start as soon as u feel u have enough energy or a few mins.
I have a personal trainer who continually changes the routine. We've done lighter weight, more reps...which builds up to heavier weight, less reps, which leads to the same weight, more reps. She has also had me go until I can't work it any longer, to see how far I can be pushed before determining if we go to more reps or more weight.
About counting in between reps, or the down time...when we train, we section up my body so that I am not doing two in a row. For example, I did exercises in this sequence for the hour: arms, inner/outer thigh, shoulders in that order, 3 times and then 2 mins of high intensity cardio, then a different set of 3 exercies focusing on the same body parts, 3 times...then 2 mins of high intensity cardo, and so on. Does that make sense? So anyway, then you don't have to sit there and wait for a time delay...
And remember, no question, especially from you, is a dumb question!
