I agree with Sahadat. Actually, I remember one of my Arabic professors at university saying that according to Imam al-Shafi'i (who was one of the great scholars of Islamic history), it is wajib on every Muslim to learn Arabic because it is the language of Islam.

It makes sense because so many of our religious books (not just the Quran) have been written in that language. That the majority of Muslims do not understand Arabic is the root of many of our ignorance and misunderstandings about our religion.

Wajib by the way is an action that is necessary in order to follow the shari'ah. It is often used as a synonym for fard (an obligatory part of the shari'ah). Al-Shafi'i calls it an wajib because understanding Arabic opens the doors to Islam. He refrained from calling it fard (individual obligation) because many people are simply unable to acquire languages. I should also point out that no Imam has ever said that knowing or not knowing Arabic affects the level of one's faith or relationship with Allah. It is not necessary, for example, to know Arabic in order to receive the blessings of prayer because that action is obligatory and the blessings follow according to the level of one's sincerity. However, learning Arabic is wajib for obvious practical reasons.

Take it from me, it makes life so much easier when you can understand the sources of Islam directly without having to go through a translation.

i do go on, don't i?!?!

I wish I spoke or even read Arabic... Isn't it an Islamic duty to learn Arabic in order to read the Quran? It's less about trying to be an Arab and more about trying to be Muslim...? Anyway, what's far worse/more embarassing is Pakistani/Indian trying to be Black and gangsta - Ali G is definitely based on an Asian trying to be Black!

i do agree with Misslondon. there was a time when being an asian on edgeware road was a novelty. but now its just full of egoistical asian men smoking shisha like they're back in the village! and its so funny hearing them try to speak arabic.
