Attan!

Although we've been raised in the west, Alhamdulillah, our parents have kept us close to our traditions....
One of these traditions that im praticularly fond of is ATTAN!....

I know reading about attan is more dull than actually watching it....but i feel it deserved a journal entry in our pashtun village....

I LOVE ATTAN!...me and my family find any excuse to crank up the pashto tappay with the darya/dhol, aur attan shuroo ku....its really fun and empowring to be in unison like that.... (and im not talking about the flimsy two-step one ;) )

Theres so many different kinds of attan depending on location, tribe, gender etc....its sooo much fun learning all the different steps to every new style....

SO TRY IT! :D

ASIDE: PASHTO SHREK :p www.virtualafghans.com

Unoit, why fear accurate representation? If I can put my ugly mug up then anyone can :P~

Yup, I'm a born Amreekaayee as they say in the tribal areas :)

I see. Is it the one performed by men with a sword in each hand? Basically they twirl round and round. I have seen it plenty of times in Pakistan.

I have been following this JE but am still at a total loss for what "attan" is. Call me stupid but I still don't have a clear idea of what it is -:- Can someone kindly elaborate?

Kaniza khoori I rule at Ataan lol...if you're ever in Texas and there's an Afghan wedding I'll let you know. You can tell the groom's side you're with the bride's side and tell the bride's side you're from the groom's side :)

Kaniza, I say that because the other so-called Ataans aren't really authentic. They incorporate the "Harmonium" (keyboard/accordian type instrument) and the dance itself is like slow and tame. A classic example of this watered-down Ataan is the way the Kabulis do it. Its so gay the way they do it.

The real authentic ataan is an all men, very aggressive, almost chest pounding ritual that gets narrowed down by process of elimination. As the Dol speeds up, the people who can't keep up sit down until there's the last man left standing.

The Waziris are awesome at it especially because of the way they swing their long hair. Its almost like watching a metal concert lol.

I'll try and find some video somewhere...

Attan::::

Attan is a traditional Afghan dance; its origin is the provinces to the south of Afghanistan where every celebration ended with this dance. The Beat is a traditional Afghan Beat of ?mogholi? where no other Nation in the world uses this beat its a creation of Afghans of the Moghol dynasty. A huge circle is created and the performers will follow each other going round and round in a circle to the beat as the rhythm and beats faster the slower participants drop out remains the ones who can dance and move.

There are three different kinds of attan in Afghanistan, ?wardaki? ?logari? and ?khosti? Wardaki consists of body movements no clapping and lots of turns and twists. ?logari? uses the clapping and the full turns in place as well as the main turn. ?khosti? is interesting because of the head movements the head is snapped side to sides as their long jet black hair fling through the air.

IMHO, you haven't seen Ataan until you've seen it in one of these places:

Jaji,
Logar,
Wardak,
Waziristan

:)
