Baklava

in my public speaking class, i did a cultural artifact speech on baklava. so i decided to post my recipe here.

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups chopped walnuts

1/2 cup sugar

? teaspoon cinnamon

1 lb butter

1 package, or 16 oz. frozen filo (phyllo) dough, thawed according to package directions

Syrup Recipe

2 cups sugar

1 cup water

Few drops lemon juice

1 teaspoon rosewater or orange blossom water

PREPARATION:

Prepare Syrup First

Combine 2 cups sugar, 1 cup water and lemon juice, in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, and simmer for 10 minutes. Add rosewater and boil for another minute. Remove from heat, and allow to cool.

Preparing Dough and Filling

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Mix the 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon with the nuts in a bowl.

Butter the bottom of a jellyroll pan. Unroll dough place half of the sheets on the bottom.

Spread the nut mixture over the dough, and place the remaining sheets on top. (this is the easy way, if you want you can make mulitple layers)

Cut into squares or triangles, whatever size you like. Spoon the melted butter all over the top, making sure to saturate all the dough. Bake for about 30-45 min or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and pour the cool syrup over top of baklava and allow to seep and saturate it well. Let cool, and enjoy!
