Banned books that don't live up to the hype

Have you ever read something that was notorious enough to get banned, only to be disappointed by its major lack of substance? Apart from obvious examples like "The Satanic Verses", which banned books blatantly fail to live up to the hype?

For me, it had to be Wei Hui's semi-autobiographical novel "Shanghai Baby." Banned and publically burned by the Chinese Communist Government for its "decadent" content, even occasional snippets of engaging prose couldn't save this one. You couldn't find a more trite and pretentious confection if you tried.

yes if we can get one booked, for a good price. if not we were thinking of going take away, order in lots of food, eat at inside (Someons flat) and then head off for the new year celebrations.

but a resturant is a likely too. you are most invited, and it would be great if you coudl make it

Afaq, I've only read reviews of Melancholy Whores so far... So the cover WAS approved in the name of art. Funky outfit by the way - which occasion did you dig that out for? :P

Celes: Of course, how could anyone say no to a megalomaniac with a duff tash and several chins? P: (My sympathies to some of the ladies in Saudi who have to put up with this for real).

Afaq, does Marquez's book have a picture of melancholy whores on the cover? #:

Celestine: Oi, not in front of a major Francophile like myself! Great quotes you got there though, especially the one on love...

LOL at Baba and Afaq! Who'd have thought that a book on operating systems would get banned? Unless it sent workers to sleep while they were operating heavy machinery ;)

i once read a book on operating systems that was banned in the states and wasnt available for re-sale.

i must say, the pictures of the dinosaurs on the front cover initially made me get it, i wanted to own a dinosaur booook which would help.

then randomly through out the book you would have facts about their way of life, AND then followed by such detailed analysis of OS's that i threw it in the bookshelf, next to grisham book i was once given as a gift.

pah.
