Bariatric Surgery

Someone who is very close to me is seriously considering to have a bariatric surgery done.

I want to make sure that she has all the facts before she goes any further with consultations, etc.

I am specifically looking for medical journals and research papers that can give me the scientific facts - not the version of facts that you see on commercial websites. Even if there personal experiences that anyone can share, please do so.

I want to help her make the right decision

If anyone can provide any suggestions, I would really appreciate this.

Westcoastgurl: I had a friend that looked into it. There are a few different procedures. One is the stomach stapling which cannot be undone. The other method I believe is where they put a rubber band around the stomach and that can be undone. Either way, you do loose the weight but then...you have excess skin that has to be removed through plastic surgery and ofcourse you have to exercise still. Dr.'s recommend this if a person has more than 100 lbs to loose and is in the morbid obese category. not just obese. Also most places do not offer liposuction to people more than 100 overweight. There's also a new procedure on liposuction out called Ultrasonic Liposuction, it is supposed to be safer and less bruising occurs.

Basically, the procedure means to shrink the size of your stomach, so you cannot consume more than about 5 tbsp of food at any time. From what I know, it is actually a bypass surgery, so they reconnect the upper half of the stomach to the beginning of your sm. intestine.
It is also referred to as gastric bypass.

Within the first 2 months post-surgery, patients lose about 75lbs.
