beat 'em ups..
ok, i don't know if anyone has addressed this issue already, but has anyone else wondered what has happened to the genre of "beat 'em ups"??
just FYI: "beat 'em ups" are a subclass of the genre "action-adventure" games. In the past, these were all 2D side-scroller fighting games in which you or a friend could team up and fight scores of enemies in a given stage and would then fight a stage boss that would end the stage, and then finally you would move on to the next, repeating the process..the stories for these games were very loose and were only filler for more of the action that you would play through as you advanced stage-by-stage closer to the game's end boss..some famous old-school examples of these classic coin-ups were: Street Fighter (the first i believe), Final Fight, TMNT ("the arcade game" & "turtles in time"), X-MEN ("mutant academy"?), and my personal favorites: Streets of Rage 1 & 2 (altho only on platform)
As we've made way into the 3D gaming era (for a while now), we see that the parent genre of action-adventure games has thrived and yet the beat 'em up is almost a dead concept..with flimsy titles like "Urban Reign" and capcom's new upcoming remake of "Final Fight," it doesn't seem like the beat em up is popular anymore.. any thoughts on beat em ups, or just shout outs to your fav. beat em ups would be appreciated.

and yes, all the games you mentioned are great fighting games..like you said, Soul Caliber, SF Alpha, etc. Fighting games are actually my fav! and my fav. by far is the Tekken series.. I used to love SF, and all the Cap Vs. series (like Cap vs. SNK 1 & 2), but most 2D fighters are almost dead unfortunately, so i think Tekken is the best of the 3D fighters..
Tariq: yes, man those are all old-school..memories!! lol
