BEHIND THE DANISH CARTOON CONTROVERSY

In a timely panel, discussants on this important issue will examine the current tensions surrounding the publication of the cartoons depicting caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, which were first published in the
Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, and the subsequent political fallout across the world. Opinions range from allegations of inciting religious hatred to the support of freedom of _expression and freedom of press. Given the widespread and contentious reactions in Europe and Asia, the panelists will take a closer look at what is driving the violence, discuss the underlying causes of the discontent elicited by this incident, and finally,
examine the larger tensions within which the cartoon controversy exists.
