Being bribed with oranges

I have an ethical question for you all:

I am currently doing my psych rotation. One of our patients is a high functioning schizoaffective. Just the other day, he gave me an orange from his lunch tray and told me to speed up his discharge process. I accepted the orange but told him I wouldn't offer him guarantees.

I wonder if that constitutes an ethical violation. Am I supposed to accept this bribe, no matter how small it is? Or should I decline the offer and possibly insult him?

The orange was his hope and by accepting it without making any promises, you let his hope live and that should be enough. There is nothing unethical about the situation as long as you handled it correctly

Odidy...yes schizoaffective disorder is a psychotic disorder...however, risperidone works wonders for these people and many of them function quite well in the community. But I'm sure you remember that from your psych rotation...

Bonethugz...it was a decent orange. Poor thing gave it to me from his meal tray...I did hook him up though!
