Benefits of Sehri

In the Name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful

Nabi (s.a.w.) is reported to have said, "Partake of sehri, verily there is blessings in the partaking of sehri."

Nabi(s.a.w.) is also reported to have said, "The differentiating factor between our fasting and that of the 'People of the Book' is the partaking of sehri."

Commentary
Sehri is the meal prior to the commencement of the fast. Ulamaa are unanimous that sehri is preferable and not obligatory. Nonetheless sehri should not be omitted intentionally, neither should one become habitual of omitting sehri.

The benefits of sehri are as follows:
Conformity to the Sunnah
Repels the anger factor associated with hunger
Facilitates the remembrance of Allah
Makes one habitual of dua at the most opportune time for the acceptance of duas, i.e. the time of Tahajud
Attracts the blessings of Allah
Makes the performance of Fajr salaah easier
Fasting with sehri is more virtuous and rewarding than fasting without sehri

Sehri should be rather later so that on the termination of sehri the fajr salaah can be performed, sehri very early might result in the missing of Fajr which is a major sin.

Please be wary of the time of termination of sehri. As a precaution it is advisable to complete the sehri 5 minutes before the time indicated on the timetable. Sehri after the time will result in the fast becoming invalid.

O Allah inspire us to be diligent in the fulfillment of this sunnah and every sunnah of our Beloved Prophet (s.a.w.). Ameen!
