Bhangra 101

i LOVE bhangra, but i am fairly new to it. What are the top 10 songs I should really know and recognize to start my journey into bhangra? Right now i'm just really into Panjabi MC and i am thinking there is a WAAY bigger bhangra world out there!!

yeh Dr zues is consistently good.....he gets it just right...dont forget KANGNA.....my god......was that a tune or what...and Rouge havent done it enough justice...no way...it was too good to start with and ok Dr Zues produced it for Rouge to....but it only worked so well coz it was such a track to start with.......what about some of the dodgy videos that come out for these songs....anyone seen the one to mithra de moter teeh????? i actually like the song but the vid kills it...a bunch of southalians with their glassys in a park...and a car??????what a let down...then they made another sht vid to billo (G money and wots his name?) another good track and a southall video!!!!!!!!!

For me, it's the opening tune! Tharthi Hilde.

Unda Da Influence - Dr Zeus...top album. The dhol intro to Tin Cheeja, samplin B21...dog'a bollox! Granted, been out a while, but get's the bund shakin! The Original Edit, Zeus' new album, gives new meanin to da word Originality. Blokes a star!

ahhh finally some more bhangraheads!! morals...u're so right, jind mahi is an amazing song, but i give the slight edge to jatt ho giya sharabee only because of its up tempo pace. even still its hard to pick between the two. plus i like the masculine lyrics of jatt ho giya sharabee...lol. hey achi11es, isnt dil nai lugda a duet between vinni and feroz khan...or is there a different version? also, i dunno if u guys have heard the song "punjab" off of apna sangeet's new album diamond cuts, but its really good, plus it's kinda on the slower side.

Blimey, joined this village ages ago! Thought it was a dead 'un! No one sayin much! Hehe!

Aman Hayer with Vinni - Dil Nai Lugda...quality tune. But it's been rinsed here (Sheraton, innit Morals!!). Jazzy B n Apache, with Dil Lutiya....slow as I wanna get for the mo. Tho my fave is old now...and a bit too up beat!

i am also obsesssed with bhangra...in fact 80% of the music on my ipod is punjabi!! i looove all kinds of bhangra from the traditional stuff to bhangra/hip hop mixes. right now im obsessed with that aman hayer mix soniye dil nai lagda..does anyone know of any other good slow punjabi songs?

usually my favorite types of bhangra songs are the ones that keep it traditional, but with the enhanced bass. one of the songs that i think does that the best is pmc's jatt ho giya sharabee. but more on the topic, i think bhangra has seen a resurgence in the past decade or so, especially in the west. part of the reason, as nush mentioned, is that bhangra mixes well with just about every other type of genre, especially hip hop since both are rooted in breaks.

yes this journal is getting very very interesting......most people i know are into more bollywood then bhangra....bhangra rocks it for me....i do like the reggae sound in bhangra like dil lutiyeh by jazzy b.....with apache indian...at mela's dont get the same vibe coz they are too spaced out....undoubtedly sikh weddings ahve a very very good bhangra vibe.....also dinner and dances provide good live bhangra bands.....and my car cd player meanwhile...!!!!!!

hehehehe you guys rock.....i think there are alot of ppl into bhangra than u give them credit for....aside from the sikh bruv'ors...most punjabi muslims like bhangra...i guess most *other* pakis dont like it coz they can't understand it...but thats poop...i dont understand arabic music..but u still find me bopping to it..mouthing the occassional *i have no clue what it means* lyric lol lol. I guess as bhangra is still hugely associated with sikh culture and punjaab..i guess others can't find a place for it in their lives....Melas i think have helped promote bhangra to other asian communites...as well as the bhngra/poppy bands that have made it mainstream and taken bhangra to another level.
I only started getting into bhangra hardcore since i moved back from scotland 5 yrs ago....but i think my knowledge of bhangra now matches that of sum1 listening to it for their whole life ;) also...i DJ in my sparetime (ok guys dont faint now)...bhangra mostly (of course ;)..but some english as well.....
i don't think you can match the beats of the dhol in bhangra..and u can mix mostly anything...dnb..hip hop...bolly...pop...into bhangra..as that is how universal it is.....u can't say that of other musical genres!

yeah, likewise, i thought i and my cousin in scotland were the only non-sikh, non-indian punjabis who were heavy into bhangra...lol. i'm so into it that even all my desi friends think im all "fobbed" out..haha. but yeah, i listen to just about anything bhangra. my favorite cd thats always playing in my car of late has been the northern lights album. i love that cd, tarv and lil dev put some serious effort into it.
