Book of the month Club
I was thinking (with the help of Faten) that we don't have enough chances to really learn about our faith except in a manner which indoctrinates us with someone elses ideas rather than engaging us and making us a part of this rich Islamic tradition that we are heirs to.
On that note I thought it would be a good idea to have a book of the month club. Looking for people serious about learning and discussing Islam together in a way that is both enjoyable, enrichening, and rewarding... both in this life and with Gods leave in the next. We pick one book a month to read (we can spread it over two months if people are unable to meet that schedule) and discuss in the meetings.
For the first month I was thinking about one of these books:
Fazlur Rahman, Islam -- $14
www.amazon.com n=507846
Rahman is the Late University of Chicago Professor in Islamic Studies. He passed away in the Late 80s and this book is an exposition of Islamic History and Thought since the Prophetic times. He has a brilliant abilityto place things in context and having read this book before I feel it helps explain a lot of how and why we think the way we do today. It is written pre-911 so it hasthe benefit of not having to be as apologetic or defensive as a post-911 work in order to get published.
Reza Aslan, No god but God
www.amazon.com
A post 9/11 book wich I haven't read but I am told is very good. I saw him talk on CSPAN." there is a lot to be learnt from him. the book I believe serves a similar function as Rahman but i'm not sure since I haven't read it.
So what do you guys think? Is this something you can commit too? I think if 5 people are serious about it its worth doing. We already have 2 :-). Who else is in?

Comments on this journal
And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! we bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection: Surely we were heedless of this.
Surely We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to be unfaithful to it and feared from it, and man has turned unfaithful to it; surely he is unjust, ignorant;
And when your Lord said to the angels, I am going to place in the earth a khalif, they said: What! wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood, and we celebrate Thy praise and extol Thy holiness? He said: Surely I know what you do not know.
And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels; then He said: Tell me the names of those if you are right.
They said: Glory be to Thee! we have no knowledge but that which Thou hast taught us; surely Thou art the Knowing, the Wise.
He said: O Adam! inform them of their names. Then when he had informed them of their names, He said: Did I not say to you that I surely know what is ghaib in the heavens and the earth and (that) I know what you manifest and what you hide?
And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam they did obeisance, but Iblis (did it not). He refused and he was proud, and he was one of the unbelievers.
And We said: O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the garden and eat from it a plenteous (food) wherever you wish and do not approach this tree, for then you will be of the unjust.
But the Shaitan made them both fall from it, and caused them to depart from that (state) in which they were; and We said: Get forth, some of you being the enemies of others, and there is for you in the earth an abode and a provision for a time.
Then Adam received (some) words from his Lord, so He turned to him mercifully; surely He is Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful
If you have no idea what I'm talking about... you didn't come to the book club :-)
four people showed up - Fattoun, muslimguy, myself and a friend of mine ... though we were supposed to discuss the book, we barely did .... from created/uncreated of the Holy Quran to hadith development to symbolism to predestination to Einstien's theory of relativity to big bang to Caliph Uthman (R) and ....
next time iA we make an attempt at discussing the book so those who couldn't/didn't show up didn't miss much in terms of the book yet missed out on a lot P:

For god sake you have been talking about this book for months and now 3 people will show up....
if we cant agree about a time to read a book, how can we agree about more important issues.. no wonder where muslims are these days... talk talk and no actions..
No hard feelings
but since i haven't even been reading, so i don't want to be the reason for delaying this meeting. let's do whatever time and day suits the majority.....
