Sources of guidence and Discovery of Purpose
God has not left us in dark to wonder and guess life but his graciousness and beneficence has bestowed upon us various sources of guidance.
Guidance through Instinct ? First Source of Guidance
The first source of guidance is known as the guidance through instincts. It is a matter of common knowledge that God has furnished us with primary instinctual equipment. This equipment helps us in the reception and transmission of basic guidance that is known as guidance through instinct. Every child (even of an animal or a bird) receives guidance through instinct. A child knows how to attract his mother's attention through cries and screams when he feels hungry. He is not indoctrinated in this specific conduct. This form of guidance is not available in the scriptures or imparted to him through some codified or documented source. This source of guidance is indicated in the Holy Quran in this verse:
Our Lord is He Who created every thing and bestowed it with guidance.
Guidance through Senses ? Second Source of Guidance
The second source of guidance is the guidance through senses. The Quran caters for the total sensory and perceptive capability of the individual. Therefore, God Almighty provides guidance to every individual through his senses. He enjoys the world of becoming through his senses. The sensory complex helps him in grasping the physical significance of the world of phenomena. The sweetness or bitterness of an article of food is decided through gustatory sensations; the pleasantness or unpleasant?ness of a sound is analyzed through auditory sensations; the whiteness or blackness of a color is perceived through visual sensations; the softness or hardness of an object or material is graded through tactile sensations; and the pun?gency or sweet aroma of a thing or object is felt through olfactory sense. This source of guidance is stated in the Holy Quran:
"And pursue not that of which you have no knowledge; for every act of hearing,
or of seeing or of the heart will be asked.
Quran further declares:
"Say: it is He, Who has given you life and assigned to you ears and eyes
and heart (to listen, to see, and to think).
The same source of guidance is indicated in this quotation of Jesus Christ:
In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people?s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.
