ETHNIC MINORITY FOUNDATION (EMF)
POST TITLE: VOLUNTEER



OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

The Ethnic Minority Foundation (EMF) is delivering a development project in three cities, London, Manchester (including Bradford) and Bristol, aimed at ascertaining whether a voluntary and community organisation like EMF can better reach excluded and hard to reach communities than statutory bodies, thereby providing better services to such communities.

The project has been set up so that Muslim women can be provided with skills in Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) like arts, drama, music, radio and television, broadcasting, painting, writing, sports, folk music etc to enable them to become employed or self employed.

The project is staffed with a Director (Project Director) and three full time Development Officers who will work with 12 volunteers and who in turn will reach 100 beneficiaries, mainly women from the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities. The beneficiaries will be trained by the volunteers in whichever form of CCI activity they are interested in. Each of the beneficiaries will be trained to use a computer to enable them to use email and the World Wide Web and also to write their CVs and also be trained in job interviews etc. Beneficiaries will be provided with a computer, on loan, to enable them to work at home


JOB DESCRIPTION

1. Work under the direction of the development officer
2. Most likely be women
3. Have good IT skills
4. Be able to train beneficiaries in the skills associated with working in CCI
5. Have experience of working with Muslim women
6. Develop and encourage beneficiaries to take up training and aspire to work in the CCI??s
7. Work with 8 beneficiaries over a period of 15 months

Each volunteer will work with 8 women beneficiaries over a period of 15 months. This is not a full time job but will require 3 ?V4 half days in one to one or group training of beneficiaries.


The work will also include assisting the development officer to recruit and motivate the beneficiaries; giving them the confidence to work in the CCI??s either as employed or self-employed.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Essential Criteria

1. A good knowledge of and cultural sensitivity towards working with Muslim women
2. Ability to recruit, motivate, train and retain thirty five beneficiaries in your assigned cities.
3. A fluent or working knowledge of community languages: Urdu, Punjabi or Bengali is essential.
4. Enthusiastic and hard working and keen to be part of a successful new project
5. Experience and proficiency in IT
6. Experience in public relations or key communication role, either in charity, private or public sector
7. Strong written and verbal skills
8. Clear strategic thinker who can shape the development of EMF??s profile
9. Demonstrative ability to grasp complex messages and communicate in an effective way with Muslim women or those from an ethnic background.
10. Excellent work skills with ability to meet deadlines

Organisational and multi-tasking skills

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience in CCI.
2. Degree in IT, media or related area preferred, but not essential if you have these skills through work experience.
3. Communications role in the charity sector

Special Requirements

?h Willingness to undertake evening / weekend duties to be able to work with beneficiaries.
?h Willingness to travel


Whereas no salaries are payable travel expenses will be paid. Office accommodation for training will also be available and a laptop will also be provided.
