BULLFIGHTING: Tradition or Cruelty

The cruel and sadistic tradition of bullfighting is, unfortunately, one of the biggest tourist draws in Spain (and other countries around the world). A recent survey conducted in Spain revealed that 60% of Spaniards are not even interested in bullfighting. Tourists are keeping bullfighting in business. I'm adding a link here to Peta's page, which has more information about bullfighting and what you (that's assuming that you are opposed to animal cruelty) and I can do to make sure that people stop pumping money into this cruel industry.
What are your thoughts about bullfighting? www.peta.org.uk

Well, the fact is that popular science assumed in the past that animals experienced NO emotions, that their actions were hormonal reactions to outside stimuli. Current research shows that they do experience anger, love, jealousy, grief, depression, etc. Hell, human drugs like Prozac are being used to treat dogs, which has to be based on the assumption that a canine brain's emotional wiring is somewhat similar to that of a human. Studies have shown that animals have much more than emotions; Jane Goodall did a pretty damn good job showing that chimps have a culture and language all their own. Okay, so I may have been a bit overzealous in my answer to Phoenix's question and maybe all animals don't experience all human emotions. But that's not what we should focus on. Let's focus on what we do share (the fear, the love, the grief) and let's try to have some compassion based on that!

I think, in the end, we can't measure a living creature's worth or place in this world by it's intellectual capacity. It's this kind of thinking that has perpetuated cruelty against animals. Animals feel pain and the gamut of emotions that we do. Can't that be reason enough for us to show them compassion?

And from a scientific point of view it is not against nature to hunt creatures below our level of intelligence for food. Maybe it could very well be against the natural way of things that we humans would desire to become vegetarians... but then again we are endowed with a level of intellect that surpasses other organisms (the ones we know of now)? the highest of which is the desire to choose.

Ah, to reconcile my love of Hemingway with his love for fishing, hunting and bullfighting......man's superiority over animals has been featured in most of ol' Ernie's works.

Yeah lets just blame Ernest Hemingway for popularizing it !!! ;)

Parumpara....... :-) that is what it is!

Remember in Gladiator the Spaniard killed the humans?
Glad they stop doing that!

So I am thinking prolly some parumpara (tradition, in case u didn't get it da 1st time) having to do with entertainment! As long as its keep churning $$ for the toursim industry there, who is there to stop? I am sure there are better things to do in Spain!

How about bullfighting on PS2 or Xbox?
