I know the response is kind of late, but I just got added to this village...
To answer your question, just like in the US, Canada has two major political parties: the Liberals (i.e. Democrats) and Conservatives (Republicans). The 1990s was dominated by the Liberals, a party that generally setout many generous immigration policies. For example, many refugees from Somalia and Bosnia were relocated to various parts of Canada; also due to the Liberal-Canadian vision of a mosaic society, Canada currently has the highest percentage of immigrants in the World. Nevertheless, the Liberal Government decided to join the US-led invasion of Afghanistan but mostly as peace-keepers. However, the 2006 elections produced the "Bush" backed Conservative Minority Government led by Stephen Harper; who are responsible for the increased military presence in Afghanistan as we speak; while the Canadian Military has its hands full with the Taliban, the image of our once peaceful nation has changed due to the republican vision?
