career help!

Salaam.
I am a foreign graduate, studying for my USMLE's and hoping to get a residency....i am a little lost over the field i want to pursue as initially Internal medicine was the only field one had maximum chances of getting a residency in.

Now with high scores and a few more things added to the CV one has hopes of getting a residency of their choice. Since i am kind of partial to all the specialties of medicine, I would really appreciate some career guidance here in terms of the fields that are in demand. I would also like to know more about a career in research too.
Thanks.

if you are interested in ER as a career choice, i would recommend that you do an "observership" month, in which you can see patients in the ER under the supervision of an attending. be prepared to work very hard...and then ask for a letter of rec!

hmmm..Thanks A51, so for the start i guess i shud volunteer to help a physician with his/her research, so that i can get an idea how it works? I am definitely more interested in clinical research.

A PhD is definitely not required to do research. There is some really good research being done by physicians. However, if you want to make a career out of it, a PhD will be a huge help. You have to realize that an MD degree does not really train you to do scientific research. In order to get that training, either you have to spend time in a lab learning from another trained researcher or you need to get the PhD. Another consideration is the type of research you want to do. If you're interested in basic science I would highly recommend you get the PhD. However, if you're only interested in clinical research, an MD would suffice.

Regarding Research, I like cardiology a lot and i do want to have some research exposure/experience.
Is Phd the only path for a career in research?
Can i do some research work while preparing for my steps?
Thanks.
