cat dental hygiene

Do any of you brush your cat's teeth? I know that the vet reccomends it, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get Linus (my tabby) to actually let me brush his teeth. He recently got a thorough cleaning at the vet (his previous owners really neglected his health). Since then I've just been putting fluoride in his drinking water. Any advice on cat dental hygiene would be welcome.

thanks for the tips! i'm not sure about chewing gum. i have a feeling that it's not too good on the lil' kitty appendix.

Here are some links on cat dental hygiene:

www.thepetprofessor.com

Hope that helps answer some questions here.

Unefemme: I use dental fresh and tartar treats, and while it's not as good as brushing, it beats the trauma of trying to brush my cat's teeth. He also gets regular vet checkups, about every 6 months, since he's a senior citizen.

i only feed my cat dry food - and i've never brushed his teeth. they look really good to me... while mine look like Austin Powers. he's still pretty young - just turned five. will i need to really start paying attention to his teeth as he gets older? or, get him some kitty dentures?

they don't mind it @ all, you have to get them used to it at a younger age.

My cat is very picky he doesn't like tartar treats he only likes his food and meat. Also you can try using malt flavored tooth paste and try to brush your cat's teeth. I did that with my other cat and he was fine with it.

Sweet: Thanks. I'm actually using dental fresh in his water. You're right, it's a lot easier than trying to brush his teeth. I guess that's probably the best I can do, and then just get cleanings at the vet every so often. Have you tried the different tartar treats out there? Linus likes them and I'm happy knowing that they have the added bonus of preventing tartar. I'd definitely reccomend them.

I use dental fresh which removes tartar and plaque from you cats teeth. All you do is put it in your cat's water, it is much easier than brushing!
