Chomsky Event for American Muslims
Hey salaams,
Anyone want to help with a Chomsky event? He's agreed to come and speak to the American Muslim community on May 7, 2006 in Manhattan. The title of the event is "A Dialogue on Shia-Sunni Politics in Iraq".
1) We need to figure out which Muslim speakers to invite.
2) AND we're trying to get Lincoln Center.

I would love to help out...InshAllah i am going to try attending the meeting this wednesday if possible. If not please keep me updated. I am a huge fan of Chomsky....one of the best speakers especially after Edward Said.
Good question. Our mission statement is:
"Independent Viewpoints (IV) is committed to creating a public space that fosters political awareness by providing a platform for alternative viewpoints, both within the American Muslim community and between Muslims and other concerned citizens."
There will be a panel discussion between various Muslim speakers on the Shia-Sunni Politics in Iraq and a Q& A. These speakers have yet to be chosen. Chomsky has said, like you hinted at, that he is not an expert on this subject so his talk will have more to do with taking part in the political process - its a good segue after hearing all about Iraq, we think. It will give people a chance to think about what they can do to affect US domestic and foreign policy as American Muslims.
Chomsky even helped us come up with our mission statement. We want the American Muslim community to hear a perspective like his because many of them (mostly older generation) have never heard such views. They're used to CNN, ABC, Fox, and CBS. Our main purpose is to jolt and shock American Muslims into talking about and partaking in politics. Chomsky's views, since they're pretty radical, should do just that. They don't have to agree. In fact, if they get upset, it's probably better ;)
If you and others would like to help out with this event, please come to the first public Volunteers'/Informational Meeting this Sunday Oct. 2nd at Rutgers University Student Center in New Brunswick, NJ, from 5pm-7pm, in Room 411.
