Climb Mt. Whitney Anyone?

Hey Everyone.

I need a victim, I mean buddy to summit Mt. Whitney with me. I reeeeeally want to climb it but everyone I know is lame and gives me excuses like, I'm not in good enough shape. Blah!

Mt. Whitney can be most directly reached by a 10.7 mile (17.1 km) trail from Whitney Portal, 13 miles (21 km) west of the town of Lone Pine on the east side of the Sierra. Ice axes and crampons are needed in spring and early summer, but technical climbing equipment is not usually necessary between mid-July and early October. The elevation at the trailhead is 8360' (2550 meters). The elevation at the summit is 14,491' (4417 meters).

This is a killer hike! - A must for the extreme day hiker. With some careful planning, some conditioning, and the right mental attitude this can be a successful day and an unforgettable experience. Mt. Whitney is a 22 miles round trip hike, has an elevation climb of over 6000 feet, and is one of the most famous extreme day hikes.

The Trail: It averages about 550 feet elevation gain per mile, an easy slope. There are a few shallow stream crossings with a couple of slippery logs and rocks. The trail surface is smooth in most places with some rocks up at the higher elevations. Even in the summer time small patches of snow/ice can often be found on a couple of the 97 switchbacks above Trail Camp.

How Long Does it Take? The ascent time for a day hike up Mt. Whitney is a fast pace of 5 hours, a moderate time of 7-8 hours, and a slow hike of 10 hours. I would like to move at fast pace, moderate at times.

So, if you're not some ax murder and I can be assured that I won't wake up in a tub of ice with my kidneys missing, then holla at your girl. But if your some crazy dude that's sketchy then I must warn you, my right hook is lethal. ;)

Stay Metal,

Leen

Ah, did the Whitney hike. If you haven't done it already, just make sure you get there early. We went up and came back down in the same day (coming down at night). You don't really need a partner to climb the mountain though. Make sure you bring a windbreaker and thermal for the top and in case the weather gets bad, but keep your daypack as light as possible. If i was you, i'd seriously consider driving there the night before, and then just starting stupid early in the morning.

I have been shuttling between Portland and Sacramento lately for business. So far in California I have got out into Yosemite area, also want to visit Desolation Wilderness and Sierras. InshAllah I?ll be making a trip for Whitney or Russel (or both) sometime within next couple of months. I?ll be able to take some days off for that trip but they will in conjunction with some weekend.

Mt. Russell. Check this www.summitpost.org

Standing next to Whitney, its knife edge approach to the summit makes it a total climber?s delight and offers the best views in the region.
