Coffee or chai? Linux or Windows?
There is no MCSE at the end of my name. No one has ever called me the System Admin in my life. Yet, computers are something I have been playing with ever since I was a little boy. I consider myself a medium to advanced level user, with emphasis being on user.
A few weeks ago I decided to play with the Linux operating system after checking out some books at the Barnes & Noble bookstore that I frequent with my friends. In this JE, I?ll share my experience with you in installing and running Linux on my 5 year old spare laptop. Why Linux? Because its FREE and because I hate Microsoft and their dictatorial market practices.
The Machine: Dell Latitude LS, P3/500MHz, 256Meg RAM, 60Gig HD, D-Link PCMCIA wireless card
OS Distribution: After searching on the web, I decided to go with Red Hat?s Fedora Core distribution which you can download for free. The graphical installation was simple but since I have never worked with Linux or Unix before, I had to do it twice to get it right. It comes with loads of free software which was very impressive.
Post Installation: Although I am very impressed with Linux, configuring it was certainly no walk in the park. If you like to work with things that are not prefect, things that you have to tweak and customize, you will love Linux. However, an average Joe User will probably drop it faster than I can say Microsoft. Drivers are not available, devices do not work.
The Verdict: Linux is HERE to stay. Microsoft should be afraid. But for new users, I would recommend installing it on your spare machine and playing with it before adopting it as your main OS.
Support: Read books. Read the forums online. Join a Linux Users Group in your area. Google would be your first stop to find the support you need.

I must say that for a home system, SuSE Linux rocks! Installation was as easy as deploying XP. With the easily available codecs and plugins, I am able to play the proprietary WMA, MPEG, and MP3 files on my Linux machine. I rank this above Red Hat's Fedora OS in terms of ease of use and configurability. You can download it from here en.opensuse.org
I think SuSE would be ideal for your home machine.
It's good to have an in the know PM running the show... far too often PMs are more of a tolken "Action Item Man" Hero :P (if you haven't scene the cartoons series... google it ;)

i like linux and my plan was to run windows and linux on one of my machiens at home that i built from scratch ... but due to the hard drive glitch, the system started giving problems and i got too busy/lazy to go back and fix it ... hence a new intel motherboard went fully unused ...
khair, linux is indeed a nice alternative to have ... i anandoned IE in favor of firefox a while ago ...
