Collecting / Shipping Non-Cash Donations
Salaams,
Some quick notes/observations:
1. Please touch base with an organization that is willing to accept your goods before you decide to embark on any more NEW projects when collecting non-cash donations. Beyond collecting donations, these organizations still need money or assistance to transport/ship them overseas.
2. Please realize that there is no central information location for needs/wants/updates, so multiple people/organizations/companies will probably have to be contacted prior to gaining up to date information/resources.
3. Clothing was being tossed on the side of the road by the ton in the last 60 Minutes special done on the earthquake (this also happened after the tsunami as well). With shortages of medication, medical supplies, food, clean water, tools, machinery and adequate shelter, a new wardrobe would be difficult to store/manage/clean/transport.
4. Amazingly enough, personal hygiene products and undergarments usually are very much in need but hardly get donated partly because these items really ought to be new and also the "embarrassment factor" associated with asking for and collecting these types of products. Again, contact multiple organizations and establish a relationship with them prior to collecting new donations. Also, due to cultural sensitivities, please confirm exactly which products and brands are acceptable for collecting.
3. As of ~11/14/05 PIA had >100 tons of donated goods awaiting shipment around the world. While PIA may not be accepting any more free donations, paid/reduced fee shipments with them or other carriers may be a way of negotiating transport of donated goods.
4. Hidaya is a San Francisco Bay Area organization. They have a container shipping program and also some arrangements with other shippers. They will probably be your best for shipping donations to the region. You may ship donations directly to their U.S. location. They do request a donation of $1/pound to help defray the shipping costs from their U.S. location. Prior to sending shipments, please do touch base with Hidaya to see if there is any way to collaborate with them:

6. Beyond them, try:
Islamic Relief www.irw.org
The Citizens Foundation www.tcfusa.org
OPEN www.opensiliconvalley.com
SAQUAKE www.saquake.org
Red Cross / Red Crescent www.redcross.org
Keep up all of the good work. They still need our support and prayers.
Hope this helps.
