Competitive Mid-Sized Luxury-Performance Sedans!

hmmm... The mid-sized luxury, performance sedan segment in the automobile industry has never offered so many distinguished models to the public!

Which of the following would you be keen on, if you were planning to acquire a luxo-sports sedan?

- 2005 Mercedes Benz CLS500
- 2005 BMW 545i
- 2005 Lexus GS430
- 2005 Infiniti M45
- 2005 Acura RL
- 2005 Jaguar S-Type
- 2005 Audi A6 4.2
- 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

My personal choice is the Mercedes Benz CLS500. I am fixated on its sleek looks & low-key presence, the sophisticated & plush interior, and it's original overall design! I just wish the US market would get the CLS350 (V6), but the only two models bound for America are the CLS500 and CLS55 AMG.

Yo, nice find! Basically same comparo' as above, except w/ 6cylinder, AWD versions of the models. RL prevails, how sweet is that!

Not feeling the new body style BMW is taking - we will see how well it does in comparison to the previous model

Distinguised I will let you slide on this one

I was reading Road & Track - the article was interesting with the outcome when testing full size luxury sedans which included the:

BMW 750
Mercedes S500
Jaguar XJ8
Audi A8
VW Phaeton

The BMW 750 dominated while the Phaeton placed in fourth and if I am not mistaken the Mercedes placed last.

They were tested on drivetrain, 0-60, quarter mile, interior space, comfort, DPS, etc. etc. etc.

They classify the TL & RL as midsize yet have the Accord as a full-size in Canada? I guess it depends on who's classification system you use. Weird.

I just saw the new 6 series last night. gawd, that thing looks super-sweet. If i could make love to a car, it may just be that car! (no wise-crack remarks Afg!) :)

GB, the EPA classifies both the TL and the RL as 'midsize'. Yes, the RL is slightly larger too! Also the Maxima by Nissan is classified as a 'midsize' car. This designation accompanies the car's MSRP sticker.

Inthamix - the Phaeton I think is a great car, my cousin is a GM for a VW dealership in California so I have had my hands on one. For people who have purchased the Phaeton mention it is the best car they have bought and will not trade it in - but how many people would you see purchasing an 80k VW over a BMW or Benz? The market is hard - Phaetons are hardly even being purchased (in the states that is)

(Apc will eat this up being a VW afficianado, I'm sure...) My favorite sedan in the world is the VW Phaeton. It's hand-assembled in it's own factory by VW's most skilled technicians. Also it's basic platform, drivetrain, and other engineering details are to be incorporated into the forthcoming Bentley Continental GT sedan!

It's been already called the world's best car, any price, anywhere, anytime. Yet it's a phenomenal failure in sales!

(remind any of the Acura NSX! No wonder I'm so drawn to the Phaeton... it's too good to be recognized in it's own time & era, just like the NSX.)

Actually all the cars listed above fall into a the midsize, midlevel luxury, V8-powered, import sports sedans.

Fullsized models would be: Mercedes S-class, BMW 7-series, Lexus LS430, Infiniti Q45, Jaguar XJ-series, and Audi A8 (respectively). Acura doen't offer a fullsized premium model. BMW M5, Audi RS6, and Mercedes E55 AMG are not included despite being midsized. They fall into their own niche (perhaps another journal)!

The new Acura RL is very slick, technology & luxury wise. The interior is fabulous, ergonomics are near-perfect w/ alot of stuff incorporated. It's just the exterior I can't seem to find myself to be overly keen on; certain angles & views, it's like an Accord sedan on growth-hormone =/

Wow...quite the price range you've got there. I'll take the RL. Reliable, relatively cheap, decent performer and comfortable. Not much more to be asked for.

I don't like the body shape of the CLS - it looks like a buick

The Infiniti M is nice, the RL tops my list and the Audi A6 is pretty hot.

On paper, I'd go with the Infiniti M45 Sport, with the Audi A6 4.2 running a close second.

... The CLS500 indeed is priced uber its contemporaries, but its size/performance/target_market is on par w/ the other mid-sized V8 luxury sports sedans (sans the Acura offering). My cousin bought a Mercedes E55 this past year & speaks endlessly about it- I think that's more on par w/ the M5, much like the Audi RS6 & Jaguar S-Type_R.

The CLS500 is an awesome car but you pay for it. I believe base is about 10 grand higher then the second place bimmer (not counting the other benz). I'm a bimmer guy but I hate that new interior. Would have to test drive a few of them.

I really love the looks of the new RL but i'm a little biassed. I have always preferred BMW's in this segment and i really detest anything audi or mercedes, so after test driving all cars, i think i would opt for the beemer.

I'd really have to drive them. can't go based on emotion only.
