i agree fon, as the guys here have said (especially saha who wrote an essay on it).. when a girl flashes, asking to be ogled, they oblige..

but there's a difference between looking and touching

btw, one of the 'perils' of living in the north is going out and seeing girls wearing lingerie as club gear (i saw one girl in a thigh-skimming nightie i'd seen in top shop.. ); ) and they refuse to wear coats over this stuff.. even during snow storms.. people in london have slighly better dress sense

ok folks...lets get real here...coz i get the feeling some of you are just trying to be PC about it :P.....i for one....when i see a gal either wearing next to nothing....or is busting out of her outfit......would automatically assume she wants attention....coz one doesn't simple go around like that without realising the consequences....and what i mean by consequences..... are the stares, wolf whistles, deorgatory remarks etc....so in that respect yeah i think she is asking for it. I'm not referring to rape or sexual assault...coz NO ONE asks for that.

If the car keys are left in the car, is that car asking to be stolen???
Dress don't make the personality. Its the person who makes the personality. If a female think she looks good in a dress, then she has all the rights to wear it. and SHE IS NOT ASKING FOR ANYTHING, so don't get any ideas.

Humm, I agree with Irfani on both situation A & B, that no one has the right to think she is asking for it, because of her dress wear...
I do understand there are discretions and limits.
Women tend to go with the flow of fashion, not all of us ladies wear the cloths we wear because we want to get attention or looked at or are SLUTS.
It?s difficult to walk into a clothing place these days and find something that would be fashionable and yet covered. Something or another will be too low or too showey on the dress.
There is also a time and place to wear things....what I wear when I go out with my girl friends is going to be slightly different from what I wear when I am around adults, meaning....aunties and uncles, family.
If a young lady goes out on a date and she wants to look really nice, she may wear a nice al-fit, but if the al-fit she wore had ONE part that was showing....that doesn?t mean its okay for him to think that the girl is easy or that she is asking for it....different cloths fit Women in different ways....and it DOSE NOT DEFINE A WOMEN!
We all have different BODY types.

coolfire, that is a great rule: 'If you don't want to see an 80 yr old grandma walking around in it, maybe you shouldn't either'.. :P

dcguy... 'Good LAAAAwd, she's fine..'.. so THAT's what those looks mean.. :D

wow you guys all have broadly the same views on this .. i asked this question partly because some people (mainly 82 year old decrepit dinosaur british judges) have acquitted guys of assualt based simply on the shortness of a woman's skirt.. and the 'conclusion' that she dressed provocatively, so should be able to bear the consequences of that.. (why isn't there a sick smiley on here..?)

yea its simple really - you should know the consequences of the way you dress.

for example, if a guy parades around with his fly open, he is certainly going to draw stares and glances ...

i agree.. but when she does dress the way she chooses to, she should also be aware of the consequences.. b/c what others interpret her dressing as, varies from person to person, her intentions might be clean, but not everyone else in this world does.. and as many here might also agree to this entry, im pretty sure many still judge these girls and call them names when they see them dressed provocatively..

SITUATION A- I had a change of opinion on this topic after watching Jodie Foster in the movie I think it was called "The Accused" where she was sultry, flirting, etc and got gang raped. The defense for the suspects was 'she was asking for it'. So if harrassment/molesting means physical, mental, sexual abuse, I find them guilty of not being able to control themselves. Other than that, if a guy stares/drools at her, she has to accept that as she does have some control on how people will react to her as she walks by. SITUATION B- No one has a right to think she is asking for it. Take a cold shower.

Women do have a right to wear whatever they like. The more provacative an outfit is, the more comments, glares and stares. Is that a good thing? Ask the girl wearing the outfit. There's a difference between self confidence and lack of self esteem. The latter will sometimes cause a girl to show off way too much simply to get noticed. Why? That's another topic all together.

If a girl is cool w/ dressing sexy and revealing and self confident.. it's all good. For guys, sure we look, smile and politely say to ourselves.. Good LAAAAwd, she's fine.. but politely.

If a guy is gonna be an ahole about it and make rude and insulting comments, that's sucks, and unfortnately for ladies, you have to deal w/ such creeps.. part of life.

Depends what we mean by 'asking for it'? If you mean asking for rape or sexual assault then no, of course not, not under any circumstances. Even if she's going topless, such acts are still illegal and you are responsible for your crimes. If I can see a half-naked woman and control the desire to leap on top of her so can you. It's not actually that difficult...! If the show of naked flesh is considered provocation for rape, than we really are no better than animals.

But if a woman wears a cleavage-revealing top tha I will happily have a look and have no compunction in making it clear I'm looking. If she's showing it than that's a clear invitation to look! I will cheerfully oblige. After all, she'd feel terrible if she went out in a micro-mini and not one man noticed!!

Labs, I would safe is defined each individuals better judgment. But I would say there are places that exist - with men - that are safe. But if the place is unknown to you, then discretion is always better in my opinion.

My opinion of revealing clothes for women: If you don't want to see an 80 yr old grandma walking around in it, maybe you shouldn't either. Fashion is great, but so is decency :)

you guys are hilarious..

i agree with all your points of view.. looking at environment/ common sense/ having the right to be 'fashionable' and not be hassled/ but still hopefully trying to dress decently....

yb, i agree with your first point, wear what you want and assume you will be safe when going out......... but then would we/ should we let our daughters out of the house when they are dressed in a mini...?

coolfire, 'But if you are in a safe place' makes me wonder.. what is the definition of a safe neighbourhood.... one where there are no nasty men lurking... or no men at all.... !
