Salam,

Can someone guide me on how to become a counselor? Do I need a psych degree or certificate (I have an MSEd)? I have no idea where to start.

Hmm.. if you were in NJ I could get you a job for sure cuz the place I work is growing so they're in desperate need of people. If you're really serious for some work, try going to your county's website and looking under social services or family guidance. They're always looking for people who can help. If that doesn't work, let me know. I'll think of something else for you =)

so where do i start? do i work with a psychologist? do they take random ppl that shadow them? i guess i can even work /volunteer at Women In Crisis?

volunteer work would be great but depending on the program you're involved in, you might be asked to do an externship. In that case, you may be able to do an externship right where you work. No experience ever goes wasted. While you do the volunteer and/or job, you might be able to decide whether that's really the field you want to go into, or you might choose a specialty which is more suitable for you. In either case, I don't see how volunteer work or a job in the field could hurt you 'n that goes for any program, not just counselling.

marriage and family issues in particular... ive been looking into psych and social work programs. while im looking or even studying, do you guys suggest that I try to either volunteer or work somewhere? the link you give below makes it clear that ill need work experience- does volunteer work count?

What kinda counselor u want to become ..... I mean do you have some specific field in mind ... i have counseling degrees and certificates for few different areas in psych field ... Lemme know if u need info for something specific ....
