Da vinci code

Anybody read the Da Vinci code. What do people think about it. I am about half way and found the story to be challenging and gripping.

saw the movie the other week. so this is the story about the fictional biggest lie of the last 2,000 years; the biggest lie of the last 2,000 years! in a motion picture format you'd expect THAT to come across over multiple levels: in the acting, the narration, in the production. we should FEEL the danger and the burden and the suspense and the shock. and we should feel it in a sweeping stunning huge way. instead i felt like i was watching steven spielberg's "the goonies" (kids find treasure map; look for hidden treasure). the whole thing was so bland that the most interesting part of the movie were the two scenes (after the two climaxes) where the digital colorists had crushed the blacks and raised the saturation. very beautiful. like fuji velvia (maybe it WAS a different film stock). the rest of the movie looked washed out by comparison. but i guess this is the wrong forum www.cinematography.com for that.

fantastic plot. truth and fiction mixed just right - can't tell where one starts and the other ends. Extremely hyped because of the inisinuations it makes about christianity..therefore becoming the second most read book in the world after the bible.

Will you lose anything from life if you don't finish it. No, I think not.

What will you gain from? A sleepless night, a good lesson in tight plotting and succint writing and freaking great research.

Does it succeed as fiction? Well, I'd think 99% of people managed to get to the end, what do you think? So, yeah, it does.

second that for angels and demons. a better book...

btw i was in london a few months ago and made a trip to westminster abbey in the rain, and i walk into the square and see a motion picture camera crane, crews in black rain gear, and tom hanks! very cool. stuck around and watched soem of the steadicam shots outside the abbey. hung out with teh film crew (you wouldn't believe how eager people are to talk to u when u understand what they really go through: "must be a b**ch keeping the water out" "wow. how do u pull focus on that!"). lots of nice memories of london! will be kinda cool seeing how it turned out in the movie.

I bought the book hoping it would entertain me on my flight from san fran to DC. Unfortunately, all it did was bore me to tears. Extremely poorly written. I should have read the Tipping Point instead.

You're absolutely right! This book is both challenging and gripping. I just can't believe I took this long to begin reading it. I myself am half way thru it.
Somebody made a comment that the book's main character had no depth, but was he the real protagonist. Wasn't the Code and all that it implies the main character, a character we would like to decipher...I mean do we really care who that "American symbologist" really is. While I'm reading this book I realize when I'll be walking away from this book, it's not the thoughts of the characters I'll be taking with me, it's the Code. Sure it's all hearsay...but what a concept!

Da Vinci Code was my commuting activity for three days. Total Fluff reading that worked to pass the time away.

Adeel you say you are finding it both challenging and gripping? Challenging as in mentally stimulating or challenging as in a challenge to read *yawn*

Anyone ever see that series "contact"? Or was it connections. I can't remember. It was a british gentleman who would go through the different historical steps towards a particular invention. It was always fascinating.

I thought that was the interesting part of DaVinci Code, the jumping around between very different disciplines. It's entertainment, but I didn't think it was very well-written. Just fun. :)

I really don't think it was meant to be anything but entertainment, definitely not a history lesson :) In my opinion.

The ending was a bit... I agree, anti-climactic.
But it is a page-turner.

Must... know... who .. killed.. french guy.

I think a lot of people expected too much of this book because of all the hype. Its a good read, with some interesting concepts. The characters had no depth whatsoever, the ending was abrupt and anti-climactic, and the only interesting part of the book was the concepts it introduced. These ideas are not terribly popular among Christians because it questions their whole belief system - so I am sure anyone would take it personally. The concept of Jesus marrying Mary Magdelene, and her being his successor as the leader of the church he established is something that people might want to explore with more of an open mind, but I doubt it can be done because it seems the opposite of what Christians are born and raised with. Can't really blame them, what if Muslims were told that some very basic aspect of our religion was not founded in truth - I doubt we would be embracing that concept either. Too bad historical accuracy has never been a strong suit for western civilizations. Anyway, I wonder what Muslims have to say about Mary Magdelene. Anyone know?

LOL - in total agreement with you Celestine. Sensationalism that only attempts to give depth to the characters in it, but fails miserably.
