After death and before the day of judgement is something called 'punishment in the grave' where we will be treated accordingley to our good/bad deeds... so bad deeds will mean that the grave will close in on us and the worms etc in the soil will eat at our bodies... it is then that we will desperately want to come back to earth to rectify our mistakes but the angels will say... its too late we cant send you back!
Also its not as black and white as 'if we have suffered on earth then we will go to heaven' that would mean those that suffer financially, emotionally etc are permitted to commit sin.

There is a video lecture by Hamza Yusuf called Dajjal and the New World Order. It's amazing and I advise everyone to get hold of it.

Dajjal is the Antichrist or false-prophet who will come at the end of time to ferment untold tribulations for the world in general and the Muslims in particular. All the prophets warned their nations about him and our beloved Sayyidina Muhammad said he would be the greatest tribulation the world will face.

There is an interesting hadith in which the Prophet told us "The Dajjal is one-eyed, but your Lord (Allah) is not one-eyed." The Dajjal, may Allah save us from his evil, will tell people that he is god and the disbelievers and hypocrites will believe him.

But we must remember that the True Lord is not one-eyed. What does this mean? Hamza Yusuf said that to be one-eyed is to lack depth in your vision. What you see or believe is just superficial. But the True Lord is not one-eyed; what he tells us to believe has depth.

As Ahmad Thompson is his brilliant book, Dajjal, points out you can relate this to the current world system, which is shallow and does not in any way serve the principles it purports to uphold. All its institutions --- political, social and monetary --- exist only to benefit certain elite groups. But what Allah tells us is for the benefit of all mankind. As Ja'far ibn Abi-Talib, may Allah's pleasure towards him be unending, who was the cousin of the Prophet, said to the Negus when the early Muslims sought asylum in Ethiopia: "Islam came to rescue us from the constraints of the Dunya and lead us to the wide expanse of the Akhira."

It is also interesting to note that in Arabic the word dajjal (which simply means "someone who lies by habit") has also been used for gold-plated metal. All that glistens is not gold! Also, when the bedouin Arabs took their camels to market, they would cover any bodily defects with dung so that from far away the camels looked healthy. A derivative of the word dajjal was used to describe this process. Both of these definitions have been given in Ibn Manzur's famous Arabic lexicon, Lisan al-Arab.

What does all this mean then? That whatever the Dajjal (the person, his supporters or the system that will pave the way for his advent) tells us is not true. It is superficial. It is a complete lie.

All the signs of the day of judgment told in the Qur'an and Sunna (the minor and major) will pave the way for his advent. But then Allah will send Jesus and the Expected Mahdi, may Allah bless them both, to defeat him. So there is hope and hope is fard because to despair is to disbelieve in the rahma (mercy) of Allah.

I am glad this JE was put up. It's an interesting and important discussion. May Allah save us from the trials and tribulations of the age, the apparent and the hidden. Remind yourselves constantly that Allah is your Lord, that Islam is your religion and Muhammad is your prophet --- and that that fact satisfies you in thoughts, words and actions. May Allah bless us and give us the ability to worship him in the manner that he has decreed and is pleased by.
