DC rally against terrorism

Assalamu'alaikum,

I've sent this to some of you but figured I should just post here. I am not affiliated with this organization but have been asked to help spread the word. I understand that some people disagree with this rally. Those objections have been duly noted.

ma'as-Salaama

Wake-up call for my fellow Muslims
Kamal Nawash (archive)

Muslim-bashing. That?s the accusation many of my fellow Muslims now hurl at the various news outlets for their news stories about a Freedom House investigation that found extremist Islamic literature in some leading American mosques. This name-calling is unfortunate. Since 1980, the Muslim world has experienced an enormous growth of religious fanaticism and extremism the likes of which Islam has not experienced in its 1,400 years. This movement continues to grow because of the spread of Saudi-created and funded Wahhabi Islam, a sect that used to number no more than one percent of all Muslims. But now because of money and technology, it has spread around the world.

Extremism is also growing because of an ideology called political Islam. The basis of political Islam is the rejection of secularism and the belief that the mosque and the state should be completely intertwined. Unfortunately, history has shown that when politics and religion are completely intertwined, disaster results.

Most importantly, extremism in the Muslim world continues to grow because most Muslims are unwilling to admit that we have a problem with extremism and support for terrorism. The response by Muslims to the Freedom House report is not the first time that the Muslim community resorted to denial and accusations of Muslim-bashing when presented with evidence of Muslim culpability.

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9/11 terrorist acts. After 9/11, many Muslims, including religious leaders and ?intellectuals,? blamed 9/11 on a Jewish conspiracy, and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4,000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on that day.

Since 9/11, the world has watched in horror as hundreds of schoolchildren were murdered in Russia by Chechen Muslim terrorists. Scores of civilians were murdered by Islamic terrorists in the Madrid train bombings. Many others have been murdered in suicide bombings in buses, restaurants and other public places, dozens have been beheaded on camera, two Russian passenger planes were blown out of the sky, and many, many atrocities that are too long to mention. All carried out by Muslims.

With all the evidence that Islam is facing a crisis, one wonders what it will take for Muslims to realize that those who commit mass murder in the name of Islam are not just a few fringe elements. What will it take for Muslims to realize that we are facing as great a crisis as any in our history? What will it take for Muslims to realize that there is a large, evil movement that is turning what was a peaceful religion into a death cult?

Will Muslims wake up before it is too late? Or will we continue blaming an imaginary Jewish conspiracy and ?the media? for all our problems? The blaming of all Muslim problems on others is a cancer that is destroying Muslim society. And it must stop.

Muslims must wake up, look inward and put a stop to many of our religious leaders who spend most of their sermons teaching hatred, intolerance and violent jihad. We should not be afraid to admit that as Muslims we have a problem with violent extremism.

Only moderate Muslims can challenge and defeat extremist Muslims. We can no longer afford to be silent. If we remain silent to the extremism within our community, then we should not expect anyone to listen to us when we complain of stereotyping and discrimination by non-Muslims. We should not be surprised when the world treats all of us as terrorists. And we should not be surprised when we are profiled at airports.

Simply put, not only do Muslims need to join the war against extremism and terror, we need to take the lead in this war.

For those of you who get ART (Arab Radio and Television): On Tuesday, May 24 at 8 pm ET ART America's "Washington Insider" program features a debate between Hussein Ibish and Kamal Nawash. The program is hosted by Maya Berry, principle at the MidAmr Group and former Legislative Director to Congressman David Bonior, and Hala Kotb, Director of International Marketing and Communications at Zogby International. The show is English, and they usually take call-in questions.

It's funny how on this site, the "Eye on Extremism" graphic is a BRIGHT BLUE ARYAN eye.

I'm coming to denounce ignorance (ex: Nawash) and denounce ALL terrorism - violent acts against innocent civilians. May it be in America, in Iraq or anywhere in the world! Terrorism is Terrorism...no matter who is conducting it. Somebody please tell me why is it that when the Pentagon is attacked it is terrorism yet flying over Iraqi civilian houses where people are sitting at home and dropping bombs killing them and causing utter destruction are NOT an act of terrorism? Please tell me why is it that when a whole bus gets bombed because somebody suspects an IDF soldier is on board is just plain out terrorism yet an entire house can destroyed to pieces along side everything in its proximity and this is NOT "terrorism". It is true that recently many so-called Muslims have gone to extreme heights involving cruelty (ex: chechnya) in order to be heard. But oppression and injustice is being caused not only on their part. The word Terrorism should not be reserved for the Muslim alone. Walking around waving our sorry signs will not help us when injustice is occurring around the world. Who is to say that the 9/11 aftermath will not happen again to muslims because we are apologizing? There is no way that Muslims should not show up to this thing. They should show up and show what they truly believe in. "Justice for all human kind"

Umer - i'd say extremism is also a function of poverty and hopelessness... and of course religious zealots...

Isnt this Nawash guy the one who basically said he was the ONLY muslim who denounced terrorism? ... way to represent your community dude.

Extremism is a reaction to globalization and westernization. Its good that ppl are coming out and denouncing extremism but what about globalization and westernization?

exactamente sista. couldn't have said it better meself. um, btw, at the risk of sounding very uncool and out of touch with Naseeb/cyber lingo, im assuming "ITA" stands for "i tend to agree." hehe at first glance i thought it said "pita." yeah, im really starved. i hungry. i eat now. hey, speakin of washin hands, ever noticed how many non-Muslims, esp our gori n oriental sistas, use the loo without washin their hands? and esp at the gym?! ewww.. there was a show bout how many diseases lurk at the gym for this reason. n don't get me started on dinner mints, cocktail olives, and all the exposed munchies ppl touch with their unwashed hands, leaving traces of feces n urine. hmmm, suddenly i'm losing my appetite. nope, there it is. im ok.

Wash your grubby paws first! Hygeine is our friend hehehe :P ITA about those who complain and do nothing. I always think that every wave is made up of countless little drops. So, every little action we do counts for something. :)

Naa it's all gravy. I'm just hungry and therefore suffering from a case of delirium; maybe that's y i didn't grasp it the first time i read it. heheh. I'm glad you see my point in all this banter. I respect the decisions of ppl who are protesting this group because of the organizers and their respective ideas and methods; I'm sure they have their reasons for not wanting to attend. Unfortunately though, the media does not have access to that info, and really, they shouldn't, because right now they are starved coyotes that will ravage any piece of meat they can lay their grubby paws on. I just find it frustrating how many ppl complain and yet do nothing to better the situations at hand. It's awesome that people in this village, though, seem to do be participating pretty actively in such positive efforts. Represent! and now i shall lay my grubby paws on some grub. :-D

No problem. :) I apologize for my wording also, I didn't do a good job of explaining it. Even though I don't like the org behind the rally - if it serves to help the cause of education, then that's a good thing in my book. I definately agree w/ your points, too. :)

Ok, I get what you're saying about your "not caring" comment. You were referring to something else... A misunderstanding on my part. (sowee.) However, for argument's sake, I am trying to make the point here that people should really try to get up and go. I don't doubt that you're attacking this problem with your own methods, i.e., other activities. That's noteworthy. As I mentioned earlier, I make these comments in a general sense, not aimed towards anyone in particular. I still believe we should get out there and be seen in this fight to correct ignorance and miseducation. What better way to do so than to re-educate the public on what truths have been distorted so far?

Since I'm the one who made the comment you are responding to, I felt the need to clarify what I meant. I have to be honest and say I'm not sure what you mean by your last comment, though.
