Death of Afghan Detainees
An internal army report on the deaths of 2 afghan detainees in Bagram Airbase was leaked to Tim Golden of the New York Times on Friday. The article detailed the story of the two men who died in US custody.
The first man was a smallish taxi driver who was picked up by afghan warlords and handed over to the americans. he was completely innocent, but was held anyway.
The second man was the brother of a prominent Taliban-- the man's name was Habibullah.
At Bagram Air Base, soldiers used a technique where they would hit detainees just above the knee so that their entire leg would go numb.
When the taxi driver did not admit to being part of a rocket attack on the US compound, he was hit in that manner and yelled "ALLAH!". the soldiers thought it was funny to hear him scream in pain, so everytime someone would walk by him, they would hit him above the knee just to hear him yell. In one day, he was hit 100 times in the same place. It came to a point where his leg was so 'pulpy' that he could not bend it to sit in a chair.
Habibullah was a hard men who intimidated the US soldiers by his size and confidence. After soldiers completed an embarassing rectal search of him, Habibullah assaulted one of the soldiers. It took 3 more to subdue him. When a soldier said to him "you better talk or else you will be in those handcuffs your whole life", he replied "why, don't i look good in them?".
In the end, both brothers perished. They each sustained so many blows to the leg that they developed blod clots and died. They died with their arms shackled to the ceiling and with bags over their heads. They each had family and people who loved them.
The article details more horrific abuses that I didn't want to actually mention. Its disgusting, but important to read what these two brothers endured. I highly recommend it.
I just find it amazing that stories like this have less of an impact than stories about descecrating the qu-ran.
