Deathmatch #1: Spock vs. Data

Okay, so who would win in a battle of wits? Who wins your affections? Clearly these characters are modeled after one another. I'll say no more. And don't ask me where I get these photos from.

SADZ! This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time! Dudette! Where on EARTH did you get this from? I'm almost too afraid to ask! I'm literally on the floor right now. Nimoy must've been really hurtin' for cash. Oh my, oh my...

Yes in practicality the attic is limited or so it seems. I hear ginkoba expands but dont take my word for it....just listen to the infomercials. Another caveat is that data is man made, even with learning capabilities it is a powered device with limitations. You would have to assume that the biological machine surpasses the man-made machine such as data. An interesting logical assumption would be to give data the ability to have emotions. Then we could see who would really survive in a match of wits. Since spock already knows how to control his emotions, would data be able to do the same. in an apples to apples situation what happens????

Do you remember which case that was from?
That's interesting.

Actual learning might be a little more complicated than either finite or infinite elastic capabilities for the attic upstairs. :)

Sherlock explaining to Watson why he didn't know who Copernicus was, and why he really didn't care: "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it - there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones."

Is man's ability to gain knowledge infinite? (By the way, Spock is Vulcan). hmmm... I think that there are limits to what we can learn because the mastering of any subject is an implication of time. This debate over intellectual capacity reminds me of a passage from Doyle. It's the one that you and I were discussing the other night, ssahmed. It suggests that the Victorians were onto Druckerian theories on social organization and epistemology. It follows above.

man-machine vs. machine. i like it :)
thanks izmael. batta, you're watching out for something very interesting with respect to data. I never watched out for that :) ahsun dasti, I cannot remember whether he damaged his positronic net, but he probably felt a bit out of it... for a non-man machine :)

i'm sure data has some built-in module that allows learning to continue. otherwise he would still be as clueless as the day that he was .. oh wait :)
no seriously though, the premise of his artificial intelligence must include the ability to learn. albeit in ways not quite so exciting as spock. but who could beat spock's hair?

more clarification...spock always has the ability to gain more knowledge than data....nature is infinite...machines are not...

man-machine vs machine. The ultimate battle. However, data is programmed with a preset amount of knowledge. Spock can still evolve into something that could beat data. Nature wins over machine anyday....

Why does Spock look like a disgruntled waiter suffering from immense heat who is half-heartedly washing the ... er.. dirt-covered ground which may or may not be adjacent to a swamp?

Spock would try to use his subtle non-humor on Data, who would take a long time trying to understand what he was saying, while Spock would wait with his characteristic eye-brow arch, oh sorry non-arch, and wait and wait and wait and wait. Finally, he would collapse of exhaustion. Data would shrug his shoulders and walk away.

Spock would win easily. He would take advantage of Data's yearning to be human and use it against him...Where did you get those picures? ;)

spock never slipped. he was more human, however, than dater. wasn't spock's mom human??? i don't remember. in a match of strength, data would win. in a match of will, data would win. in a match of intelligence, i think spock would hand data his positronic you-know-what. ha ha.

didnt he damage his positronic net in that episode?

I was more a fan of the The Next Generation, and I always thought Brent Spiner was an absolutely brilliant actor. Remember the episode where Data had to channel 10 different personalities (some memory capsule or something, extinct race creates time capsule with ... remnants of different personalities, not in any corporal sense but apparently cognitive imprints or something - and Data's unlucky enough to channel all of them. From emperor to servant to everything in between.)
