DIVORCE

I will not let this village die!
Has the cultural stigma attached with divorce started to melt away in our society? Are you a divorcee? Has your own community ostracized you? How are you coming back to the social scene after your divorce?
Anyone, anyone?

Well that's how I felt about it and why I got a divorce, but it wasn't so blase as all that. I tried to get him to agree to go to counseling with me, etc. I kept trying to take him back and see if he'd make the changes according to his promises that always ended up empty. Marriage is tough, Dina, but it works. My grandparents were married for 60 years and counting. They keep the sex alive (shudder - ha ha) and always are teasing each other. I think that intimacy is what makes the passion stay for so long.

It's hard to live with someone though and not care about them at all. My husband and I are great friends, probably better now than when we were living together. I know he and I will always care a great deal for each other. It takes more than that however to make a healthy marriage.

Ifrit, I don't see any of that. The only thing I see is that people always ask why when you have to mention about the divorce, like it's something you want to talk about for pity sake. ha, ha!

Another thing I notice is that everyone's got to blame the spouse 100%. That is the only stigma I notice.

Dina! Don't you DARE suggest sex is overrated! Holy smokes! Ha, ha! Darling, wash your mouth out with soap and say at least a dozen hail marys - or wait, you're not Christian. Hmm...well whatever the equivalent is.

divorcees can often find solace amongst each other. i know of several people who are remarried to other divorcees. but i think its important to note that the west has its own stigmas with regards to divorced people. some people wonder "how bad does this person have to be that their significant other divorced them?" or "there must be something wrong with him/her."

Oh! Dina! You weren't supposed to agree!! You were supposed to feign innocence and pretend you had no clue what I was talking about. Ha, ha!

I think it's more a personal issue for me. I'm like Dina. I really thought my marriage would be forever, like my grandparents'.

I heard from a friend that her cousin had been in an abusive relationship, got divorced and can't find anyone now. She's a brahmin in India. It's a shame, because if she were living here in America no one would care about her divorce status. She'd be considered single, period.

Ah, that double standard never dies, does it?
