Do men hear the tick-tocking ?

No not the baby biological clock that women are supposed to be working to.. but the desire to settle down..

Is it there for men, as it is for women

Is it significant / urgent or easily ignored

And what form does it take ( I want to be young enough to play with my kids or .. some other)

I have heard a few men, sorry, loafers, describe life and the marriage question as 'There's no hurry, I don't have a biological clock, I don't worry about it, it'll happen.. at some point..'

MY mom was 29 and my dad was 31 when my parents got married. This is usually not common for 2 people to get married at such an age in Pakistan, but both my parents were into getting educated so they hadn't thought of getting married before that. They are happy and think its a best to be a bit more mature and established financially, mentally and emotionally. I think beyond 35 is old....one should get married before then.

IN genetics class we learned that not only does sperm count drop as men age, but so does the QUALITY of the sperm, ie-more chances of genetic defects. Obviously lifestyle has a huge impact also.......smoking, obesity drinking etc, along with age, all decrease the quality of sperm cells.

Men do think about settling down as they grow older. The timing and intensity of the thought could be different for different men. The desire to settle down may not necessarily be for kids but it is there. Some guys want companionship; someone with whom they could share everything. Sometimes it could also be out of desire to have an organized life. The need could also arise because everyone in your circle of friends is married now and it is hard for a single guy to hangout with married friends. After a certain age guys may learn to stay single. However, there are certain personality types who are more likely to stay single forever.

Ah, Ingenia, my parents married when my mum was 21 and dad 28.. by the time they had me a year later my dad was 30.. he says that's too old..! On the other hand my bro and sis in law just got married at 26 each.. which is probably a good age..

The other equally sad point I was going to mention was a friend telling me a 34 yr old (english) guy she'd been seeing for a year was 'missing out' by not wanting to settle down with her and 'was going to regret not being young enough to play football with his kids'..... now we think he had no regrets, as he'd bolted from relationships before and there are plenty of other women around who he could waste another year or so with.. biologically, some men can have kids at 90... and they don't all think in terms of an ideal age to be a parent..

Stajani the book Ingenia refers to is the one I was going to mention as well - it's Why men marry some women and nto others... it contains the idea that marriage as an idea to men has a shelf life, after say 35 or 38, some men will give up on marriage, the amazon.com blurb says startlingly.. "there are warning signals that a man is never going to marry; after 18 months of a relationship, the chances that a man will propose drop by 50%; to be on the safe side, a woman should seriously start looking for a husband in her late 20s; the majority of male graduates between 28 and 33 are in their high commitment years and likely to propose; after 38, the chances men will ever marry drop dramatically. At 42 or 43 many men become confirmed batchelors; single men in their late 30s/ 40s with divorced parents may believe in living together, & believe once people marry, the romance ends"

Definitely men have different phases like women and they do have a clock. Only difference is timing, mostly men like to settle late in age compare to women.

Labs: Cute picture ;) Begsy: I would have to agree with you on this one too :) My brother is almost 29 now and he wants to settle down with his girlfriend but wants to get engaged ASAP and then after his MBA school, he wants to get married or during his MBA he will get married. Before that, he didnt want to settle down...he doesnt like to go out anymore, wants to hangout with his girlfriend more....so I guess there is a biological clock for men ;) Ingenia: Thanks for the input...now I know what age group to focus on if I want to find a man ;)

I think if you ask most men, they would definately want to settle down at some stage....Anyone who is a father will tell you about the joys of faherhood...how it changes your life, priorities and attitudes.....I personally would love to have kids one day and I'm sure so do most other men.....

I love this picture by the way Labs.
I think men reach a certain age where the first sign of maturity starts to show, they stop going out clubbing..this usually means they are thinking about the next step in their lives, not necessarily marriage but close. I have seen this evident in my brother, he's becoming wiser as he gets older. I don't know whether thats down to the upbringing or just men in general waking up a bit when they hit 26/27!..

I think there is a biological clock. but different men treat it different some like to ignore and marry later in life so they 'enjoy' their life other want the companion ship of some one to be with them more than their carries they marry early. so there is definitely a clock but the tick tocking has different volume for different people

Ha ha Stajani.. in time! Just going by what my friends have observed about their 'here today, gone tomorrow' exes.. I will wait a bit so I don't influence the direction of the journal... (not that that makes sense now that I have typed it.....)
